Chapter Eight

Henry looked over the small cabin that Dylan had presented as empty. It beat staying on the exam tables, and besides, it was starting to affect the practice. The cabin was different from what he lived in with June, where he had a two-story, four-bedroom house. Then again, that life ended the day he discovered June’s body in the forest.

“Through that grove of trees and over the hill is Ethan and Peter,” Dylan said, pointing through the woods.

“Ethan and Peter?” Ajay asked. “Are they a couple?”

“Yes,” Dylan replied. “Cat shifters. I let them know you might be staying here for a while. We had this cabin built for the off chance that other shifters might join us.”

“Join you?” Ajay asked. “For what?”

“Peter was sick for a while,” Dylan replied. “It was a species thing. He’s fine now, but it had us wondering if it could be … contagious.”

“Contagious?” Henry asked sharply. “Was it similar to what Ajay had?”

“Ah, no.” Dylan shook his head firmly. “Not remotely like Ajay at all.”

Ajay turned away from them. He couldn’t seem to bring himself to look at Henry. When Dylan had suggested moving to this cabin until they knew Ajay wouldn’t have a relapse, plus to figure out where to go next, Henry had immediately agreed. Any time he was able to spend with his mate he was more than happy to milk the idea that Ajay was still recovering.

“I’ll come by in the evenings,” Dylan continued, holding out a key. “Stay as long as you wish.”

“Thanks,” Henry said as he took the key.

He watched Dylan get into his truck and drive off with a nonchalant wave, seemingly oblivious to the tension he was leaving behind. It had been two days since their stolen night together, and ever since their agreement to not say a word about the past, Ajay had barely looked at him. It was a less than ideal situation.

Ajay plucked the key from his fingers and headed up to the cabin. He unlocked the door and walked inside. Henry followed, and he sneezed over the swirling dust balls flittering through the air. The musty smell of mothballs had him wrinkling his nose as he looked over the cabin’s stark décor.

“Wood upon wood motif,” Henry said. “Not sure I love the rustic cabin charm oozing from every single facet.”

“You’re a bear,” Ajay murmured. “Seems like you’d like the lumber.”

Henry smiled. Now that he was on the inside, the place seemed even smaller. Maybe it was because two bears now resided inside. Maybe it was the fact that Henry only saw one bedroom. His cock immediately hardened with the thought that he was now living with the man he loved. The question was—how would he convince Ajay to take down his walls so they might actually have a chance?

They set about airing the cabin out, opening windows and doors for the stale air to be washed away with the sweet, earthy scents of the forest. He had lived in the suburbs once upon a time.
