Valentino Rossi in the race at Mugello, Italy 2006.
Despite various problems facing, ahead of the last series in Valencia MotoGP he actually led the championship. That's because his closest competitor Nicky Hayden crashed in MotoGP Portugal. Opportunity to defend the world title is still open.
Rossi started the race in Valencia from pole position. The 8 points advantage from Hayden brings hope for him to win the world title again. Unfortunately he performed poorly at the start of the race. After the start, he slumped in the 7th position. This makes Rossi lost control of his patience. Repeatedly trying to crucify the rider in front of him, but always fails. The pressure and frustration of expanding infected Rossi. Catastrophe occurred upon entering the 4th lap, Rossiâs motorcycle slip and fall in a corner. As his typical, Rossi didnât surrenderer, he got up again and continued the race. But 13th position is the maximum that he can achieve to finish. While Hayden quite finished in third position to secure the advantage points over Rossi and become a new world champion.
The 2007 season rolled, a lot of changes in this world's most recognizable motor racing. Motor engine in the primary class that was 1000cc reduced to 800cc. Yamaha struggled in developing this new machine. Another issue, Rossi is not satisfied with the performance of Michelin tires. He repeatedly complained about the problem of this tire that makes it not optimal in exploring the speed of the bike.
In the other hand, there is a new star who was shining bright; Ducati rider Casey Stoner. The powerlessness of Rossi overcame his technical motor problems and Stoner dominate this season. Rossi cannot even maintain the second position of the rider standings during the last race of Valencia MotoGP fail to get a single point. And then Rossi was desperate to perform despite injury due to an accident during training sessions. More painful, the failure was not because Rossi was unable to finish the race but because of his Yamaha motor problems. Stoner become a world champion, Dani Pedrosa second, Rossi only ranked third of the final standings.
Rossi took a controversial step in the 2008 season by sacking Michelin tires to change with Bridgestone, though his teammates still use Michelin. Rossi's move has criticized by motosport observers. They guessed Rossi just looking for a scapegoat for failure in the 2007 season.
The observersâ assumption was more evident when in the early series Rossi struggle. Moreover, Lorenzo raised the main podium in MotoGP Portugal with Michelin tires. Rossi just felt the beautiful highest podium during the fourth series of MotoGP China in the Shanghai circuit. Since then Rossi familiar with the main podium. A world title that two years in a row lost went back to him. Nothing wrong then Rossi celebrate the return of his champion crown by wearing T-shirts bearing the words "Scusate Il Ritardo" (Sorry for The Delay).
The 2008 season also colored his feud with Casey Stoner. As defending world champion, Stoner is very troubling to Rossi at that time.
