Bedding Close to Baby

NOT A WEEK GOES BY that I don’t get a call from a writer wanting to interview me for an article on “the controversy about sleeping with your baby.” I laugh and think to myself, what is so newsworthy about parents sleeping with their babies? Parents have slept with their babies for thousands of years, and even today the practice is not unusual. Most parents do sleep with their babies, at least some of the time—they just don’t tell their doctors or their relatives about it. Why is this practice kept so hush-hush? The reasons go back to parents’ and advisers’ focus on making children independent, while failing to understand how children really become independent. Of all the Baby B’s, bedding close to baby seems to be the most controversial.
