Lucas

I'd never considered suicide.

Until this point, I'd always seen it as a coward’s way out. But the light in my life had gone, and now I was surrounded by darkness filled with monsters.

I sat in the dark, clutching her wedding ring like it had the power to summon her back. I became vaguely aware of thick boots walking across my Spanish-tiled floor, coming to a stop beside me as I lay slumped against the cupboard like a forgotten toy.

"Lucas."

The voice was dark and menacing, but I wasn't afraid.

"If you are here to kill me, make it quick. Because I'm about five minutes away from blowing my fucking brains out," I said quietly, examining my gun before I stroked it underneath my chin.

The boots stopped in front of me, and I heard the creaking of a leather jacket as a pair of startling green eyes met mine.

I felt myself choke on my saliva and tears, the reality of the situation increasing the pressure on my tired brain. It was inevitable that Alice's father would come. They'd blame me for this, and that somehow only made the situation worse.

"I know you didn't kill her."

"It makes no difference. Either way, she is dead, and I'm here. How will we survive without her? I don't want to live without her."

The pain was increasing, the ringing in my ears suddenly too loud to even hear myself think. My stomach growled for food pointlessly. I couldn't eat. How I was managing to breathe was beyond me.

"I'm weak. I let her down. A fucking cab..." my voice trailed off as sobs took over me, making me hiccup and cough.

Leonardo studied me, tears in his own eyes. I couldn't imagine his pain, as I could imagine it to rival mine. If not worse.

"The truck driver was a genuine civilian."

I blinked, more tears falling silently down my cheeks as I rubbed at them angrily.

"So? Are you telling me this was an accident? A truck lost control and happened to smash into my wife's cab? No. I'm not buying it."

"But the brakes were tampered with. In the cab."

I snapped my head up as my eyes met his.

"How the fuck-"

"Caleb told me. It's early news. You're a suspect. They ain't gonna tell you, kid."

"So we avenge her. I'll kill them all, every fucking last one of them. Her death is my death," I whispered as he held my shoulders.

"I need you to tell me who the fuck would want Alice dead or want us to think she is dead."

"Think? You're telling me you think she's alive? Are you crazy? She had no way of escaping- the police said her legs were stuck under the fucking seat! She couldn't escape!" I roared as he nodded.

"I'm not going to believe she is dead until I see proof."

Was he fucking insane?

"Her bag was near the car. Her shoes and fibers of her fucking hair were in the car! Her blood was on the seats! The firetruck got there in time to put out the flames, but not quick enough to.
