Chapter Nineteen
It was after eleven, and Kai wanted to cry.
When he’d come upstairs with Dr. Bell, Henry had fussed a little during his exam, but he’d gone down easily for a nap after a dose of pain meds and antibiotics. But when he’d tried to put him down for bed? Nothing but crying.
He wasn’t howling like he had been when Kai came back from town, but it was still enough that Callie had started to get weepy, unable to go to sleep herself. He’d given her a kiss on the forehead, told Sammi he’d be across the hall, and cradled Henry against his chest as he made his way into the other bedroom. They’d been given it when they’d arrived but never used it.
The bedroom was… nice enough. It was identical to the one across from him, except it didn’t smell like his family.
Maybe he used his nose a little after all.
Pausing at the window, he stared sightlessly out into the darkness. He could see the shape of the trees where the forest began, but that was pretty much it. There weren’t any other lights on in the house to lend any illumination to the night.
He wondered if the threat Jess sensed was out in the woods right then, waiting.
Shivering, he tugged the drapes over the glass, hoping to block out such dark thoughts along with the moon’s light. Henry whimpered pitifully at the jerky motions, so Kai continued to pace once the drapes were in place, rubbing soothing circles into Henry’s back.
He knew his sweet boy was exhausted, but anytime he tried to lay him down on the bed, he’d shriek until Kai picked him back up. He’d hoped that he could get him to go to sleep by moving and soothing him with his scent and voice, but Henry was still going strong, and Kai’s shirt was soaked with tears and snot.
He was so, so close to just lying down and crying along with him.
As he passed the bedroom door, he heard movement and hushed voices. He paused to listen and heard something bang into a wall, Bennett cursing, and another male voice apologizing. He was a moment from opening the door to see what on earth they were doing at this time of night when the door was pushed open.
Rick’s intense brown eyes zeroed in on him, running over his body before settling on Henry’s trembling, crying form.
“Let’s go, you two,” he murmured, holding out a hand.
Kai didn’t even pause to think. He hadn’t seen Rick since he’d returned home except for the thirty seconds he’d stuck his head in the other bedroom when Henry had been napping. Kai had informed him about the ear infection and what Dr. Bell had said, and Rick had nodded before telling him he’d send up some food and see him later.
He took Rick’s warm, strong hand in his and willingly followed Rick out into the hallway and down to his bedroom. The door was open and voices could be heard from inside.
