HARPER

“Someone’s been whistling a lot lately.”

I look over to April as she fastens her boot buckles. They’re hooker-height heels with gold clasps. Her hair is in a high bun to show off the thin gold hoops in her ears.

With a hand over my hip, I look at her in mock defense. “What’s wrong with a little mouth ditty?”

“Is that what we’re calling it these days?”

I throw a kitchen towel at her from my place near the sink. “I’m smitten.”

“I can see that. You’ve seen Tanner every day for two weeks. I was about to assume you’d moved off my futon.”

I open the dishwasher to unload it. “His place is close to work. It logistically makes sense. Besides, I’ve been home.” I take out the silverware and place it on the counter. “To get my clothes.”

She laughs. “You can do whatever you want to do. I’m happy as long as you’re happy.” April takes a spot on the other side of the dishwasher. She starts to take the dishes out and places them in cabinets. “I’m happy, too, in case you were wondering.”

I glance down at her boots. “I assumed. You think I’m not gonna notice you putting on your best sex shoes and not think you have a certain someone in mind for those bad boys?”

“His name’s Gil, and he works in commodities. He’s fifty.”

“Look at us. One robbing the cradle and the other having her cradle robbed.”

“I know. What will they talk about if we ever go on a double date?”

“Tanner’s an old soul. He’ll be able to keep up.”

She closes the cabinet. “Gil’s successful, but he’s a playboy in many ways. He can definitely hang with the younger crowd.”

I shut the dishwasher and follow her out of the kitchen. Her tag is hanging out of her sweater, so I tuck it in.

She does a twirl for me. “Good?”

“Hot as hell. Knock him dead, tiger!” I give her a slap on the rear.

“What are your plans tonight?”

“Tanner’s coming over. I didn’t know you had a date. I was hoping you two could get to know one another.”

Her shoulders fall. “I’m sorry, Harp. You should have told me. I can cancel—”

“No way! You enjoy your date. Oh, shoot. Do you need me to make myself scarce? We can go to Tanner’s place.”

She places her hands on my forearms. “No worries. I can go back to his place. You two enjoy the apartment to yourselves. Just no hanky-panky in my bedroom.”

I give her a captain’s salute. “Yes, ma’am.”

As she puts her overcoat on, she fluffs her hair and asks, “What do you two do together? I mean, is it sex all the time? I’d imagine having a twenty-two-year-old lover during your sexual prime is the equivalent to dying and going to heaven.”

I laugh in agreement. “Well, there’s definitely lots of stamina on both our ends. But, no, it’s not all sex, all the time. We just kinda explore the city. Picnic at Bethesda Fountain, stroll around Belvedere Castle, or coffee at Washington Square Park.
