CHAPTER NINE

Fuck yeah! I have it. The sick bastard has a past, as I’d suspected. Everybody has something to hide, and I found his Pandora’s box. All day I’d had my intelligence team combing through Richard’s life, hoping to find a loose thread to follow.

He’s done this before. Not paying for a woman’s virginity, but he’s raped women before. Several. But being the billionaire he is, he paid them all hush money and if they wouldn’t accept it, he paid the judge too.

I’ll send Tony to track down one of the women who lives in Seattle and my other agents can fly to Phoenix and San Diego to find the two others that refused the hush money. I’m willing to bet they want to see Richard caged like the animal he is.

I swirl in my black leather office chair to face the window that stares into downtown Seattle, my eyes gravitating to Lana’s safehouse in the distance. “We’re free, baby. We’ve got him.” I murmur. Turning back to my mahogany desk, I gather the information into one document and send it securely to Tony, Dennis and Elena, three of my best agents.

Glancing at my watch, it’s mid-afternoon and I haven’t eaten lunch. I can grab something on the way, but my main focus is Lana.

As I’m grabbing my jacket, Brett bursts into my office, gasping for breath like he’s just finished a marathon, and says, “Eric, we have a problem.”

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s the new safehouse, it wasn’t vetted well enough.”

My heart turns to ice as I spin to face him, my vision narrowing to a tunnel focusing solely on him. “What do you mean?” I grind out.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. The owner of the building…it’s not the management company as we thought. A silent partner owns ninety-nine percent of the company, but wasn’t on any of the documents they provided.”

“Name.” I bite out.

“Richard Gainsley.”

I’m running before he finishes speaking. The elevator at the end of the hallway shows it’s on ground and I don’t have time to wait for it. In the stairwell, I jump down four stairs at a time, until I hit the parkade. Roaring out in my black Audi, I punch in Rick’s number on the dashboard.

“Hey, Boss,” Rick’s voice answers.

“Are you there, Rick? Are you at the safehouse?”

“No, I’m heading back there now. What’s wrong?”

“I need her out of there. Now. I’m taking her back to my place and I want all available agents protecting her, Rick. Tony, Dennis and Elena are busy, but everyone else needs to be on this. This takes top priority.”

“Yes, Boss, I’m on it.”

“I’ll see you there.”

The engine roars as I’m flying toward downtown. Screeching into the parkade, I don’t even bother to park before catapulting from the car to push the fifteenth floor button on the elevator. Running my hands through my hair, I can’t stand still for even a moment. I need her in my arms, I need to know she’s okay.
