CHAPTER 27

Callum

I feel the restraints—both wrists and ankles—before I open my eyes and find myself strapped to a fucking hospital bed, with an IV in my arm. The shades are drawn, but I can see the night sky beyond. Have I lost a day? It was night when we last killed for Patrick O’Brien and still night when we arrived at the hospital. It can’t still be that night, so I’ve lost a day trapped here and drugged by my fucking family.

And what’s happened during that fucking day?

Is Fergus dead?

Is Clancy dead?

Did she die in a fire, bound just as I am now, hating me for getting her into this while choking over her final breaths?

But no—Clancy isn’t like that. She knew the stakes and she accepted them. She’s extraordinary that way.

Undeniably perfect.

Beautiful.

A treasure so valuable she’s rendered everything else in my life worthless.

The ache in my chest is worse than the trauma my brother inflicted on my head. It constricts my lungs, suffocating my heart as the poison of grief fills every inch of me.

I’m alone in the room, which tells me everything I need to know about my family. I can’t be surprised. I knew this was coming. But experiencing it—that’s a rude awakening.

Did I deny the truth? Hold out hope that they might understand?

But they don’t matter—they can’t matter right now.

Clancy is all that matters and she might be alive. Davey could have lied. Fuck, he could have her right now. All the games swirl in my head and I don’t even know where to begin to sort them out, especially while strapped to a bed. Hey, that’s one thing I can affect. And if nothing else, I can finish what I started when I almost killed Davey in a fucking hospital for speaking inappropriately about Clancy.

Just as I’m about to start breaking things, possibly including Duncan’s fucking head, the door opens and Gage enters. His weariness hangs about him like a wraith and he barely glances at me before sinking into the chair beside the bed. Gage closes his eyes and rests his head against the tall back of the chair.

“Fergus?”

“He’s alive,” he says gruffly, releasing a breath. “Your brothers and Lily are with him. They’ll come for me if anything changes.”

A hint of relief pings inside me, but the surrounding darkness quickly smothers it. They are all together and I’m here. I don’t have to be told why that is. Fergus doesn’t want to see me and neither do my brothers.

“Do you know anything?” I grumble, ready to flinch from the only pain that can destroy me now.

“Davey left shortly after he caused that little ruckus, taking Duncan with him.” His voice rougher, he adds, “They can’t even allow you boys to be together at your brother’s hospital bed. Duncan was livid, but he went along with them—I think he went to find out what he could about Gretchen.”

The sinking feeling expands inside me, while Gage continues, “He texted Seamus that the mansion is gone, so that part was true, but they don’t know anything that happened before the fire started.
