Don’t get carried away with the “caliber wars”. First and foremost, use what you have. Get what you want. Evaluate if your wants meet your needs.
Size and other concerns
Get a handgun that fits you. Seems simple enough, but logic is often overridden by emotion. A gun that has everything you want except for how it fits in your hand is a poor value. Make sure it fits.
Snub-nosed revolvers are great for concealed carry. Not so great at distance. Most gunfights are at close range, about 7 yards or less. Snub-nosed revolvers work great for that situation. If there is a chance you will need something for farther ranges, look for alternatives or additions to the snub-nose revolver.
I like polymer frame pistols. They are lightweight, durable, flex and withstand tremendous abuse. They ain’t particularly pretty. I got over it.
Carrying a .22 long rifle pistol or rifle can make a lot of sense in a wilderness situation. The .22 is very useful for shooting small game for food. Lightweight of the ammunition and its availability is great. The .22 also does not destroy meat in the smaller game animals that the larger caliber round will do.
A .22 can become extremely valuable for a survival situation in the wilderness. As far as protection, the .22 is not ideal but it is better than nothing. With proper shot placement any firearm is lethal.
Back to the broken record. Get a Glock if it fits your hand well enough.
Bring a .22 rifle for small game hunting, if that is important to you.
Battle rifles and Shotguns
This is serious firepower. If you think you could even remotely, possibly need it, you should have it. Not going to fit in or attached on a small bag. These are for your “I’m leaving and I don’t know if I’ll be coming back” go-bag situation.
I recommend .308 Winchester as my caliber of choice. Reasons being its power, accuracy, range, and availability.
.30-06 would be another good choice. Got a surplus Garand? Use it!
Followed by .223 Remington in an AR-15 rifle.
I mentioned my choices for a .308 battle rifle earlier. First and foremost, use what you’ve got. Know your rifle. How accurate is it? How accurately can you hit a man-sized target at 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, 1000 yards? Don’t know. Might be a good idea to take some time and find out.
Any of the AR-15 style rifles will work as long as you know it is reliable and accurate. That goes for any rifle you choose.
If you don’t have a battle rifle, use your bolt or lever action in .308 or .30-06. Not the same rate of fire as a semi-auto, but works great. Makes your shots deliberate. Makes your shots count. I like bolt action rifles.
Shotguns
A defensive shotgun is short (make sure it is a legal length). It holds a lot of rounds. It is a pump action for reliability. My choices:
