THIRTEEN

‘I haven’t seen Eddie for two days,’ Juliet said as she and Alec walked to the car after their meeting with the funeral director, the second one in less than a week.

‘You’ve been at the inn.’

‘Alec, don’t you think he would have called me when he heard Mom is dead? Or you? You haven’t heard from him, have you?’

‘No. But maybe Deke hasn’t let Eddie talk to us.’

‘Eddie’s strong-willed. He’d find a way to get in touch with us, even if he can’t come to the funeral.’

Alec opened the car door for her. ‘You shouldn’t worry about Eddie right now. You have a lot on your mind.’

‘But he cared about Mom. He has to be shocked. And with Wendell missing …’

Alec looked surprised. ‘You think not hearing from Eddie has something to do with Wendell’s disappearance?’

‘I don’t know what to think. Maybe we should go by the trailer and ask Belle if he’s been around.’

‘You mean ask Deke, which I believe might only get Eddie and Belle in trouble. Let’s leave it alone for now. Eddie knows how to take care of himself. He’ll turn up.’

‘I wish I could be sure of that, but I have a bad feeling.’

‘If we haven’t heard from him in two or three days, then we’ll worry.’ Alec circled the car and got in. ‘Where now?’

‘The florist. Mom’s favorite flowers were pink, blue, white, and purple asters.’

‘Pauline Vevey will go along with anything you want and make beautiful arrangements. Lillian at Longworth Style might be more difficult.’

‘I know. But I want Mom to wear something she loved.’

‘The night we went to Danielle’s party, she wore a long, deep pink dress made from some floaty material. I don’t know much about women’s clothes. Anyway, your father said she’d never looked more beautiful and she blushed. She got a lot of compliments at the party. She did look beautiful.’

‘Then that’s what she’ll wear. Any shade of pink was my father’s favorite color on her. We don’t even need to stop at Longworth’s. Mom will wear that gown. I’ll wear my dress from Dad’s funeral. I thought I’d never wear it again.’ Juliet’s eyes filled with tears and she tried to unobtrusively wipe them away. ‘I can’t afford another reception in the church.’

‘Frank has something planned at the inn. He told me.’

‘Oh, no! He can’t do that!’

‘Why not?’

‘The expense, the trouble …’

‘Leave that to him. He was almost as close to your mother as your father.’ Juliet remained silent. ‘Are you all right?’

‘As all right as I can be right now. I don’t know why I’m not in hysterics.’ She looked at Alec. ‘I don’t believe someone broke into the house to rob it. Whoever came in had a different reason.’

‘I think so, too.’

‘Wendell?’

‘He’s missing.’

‘That’s not an answer to my question.’

Alec’s face went still before he finally spoke. ‘I think it’s possible that Wendell went in the house but I don’t know why he would want to rob it. As far as I know, he’s never been accused of stealing.
