“Sorry, but this line is very busy.”
Somebody knocked on the door.
“To hell with them.”
Somebody else, or maybe it was the same person, knocked again.
“Beth,” Bill would say, “wanting to borrow something that you’ve got. Do you suppose she really wants to borrow something you’ve got?”
“Not what I’ve got.”
Sex and booze. Only two things that mattered. Outside, it became daylight, dark, and then daylight again. It hardly mattered. This was a little part of forever.
Thursday? Friday? Saturday? They tried to figure it out.
“It must be Friday,” Bill decided.
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I just think it is.”
“Or Saturday.”
He sat up on the edge of the bed. “Do you suppose it could be?”
“It could be any day.”
“Yeah, I guess it could, at that.”
“Well, we could get the papers off the porch. That would tell us.”
“Say, that’s an idea. But you’d better get them. It wouldn’t look right for me to do it.”
Millicent slid off the bed and walked over to the closet. Bill whistled.
“You’ve got some shape,” he told her. “You talk about Jayne Mansfield — ”
“You said that before.”
“Well, I meant it.”
She put on the housecoat, stepped into the hall, and continued on downstairs. She glanced next door but Beth Ramsey didn’t seem to be anywhere about. Hastily, she opened the door and picked up the papers.
When she returned to the bedroom Bill yawned and stretched.
“So what day is it?” he wanted to know.
She looked at the papers. “The last one is Friday.”
“See? What did I tell you?”
“But it could be Saturday, just the same. The boy doesn’t go to school on Saturday and that’s the day he makes his collections. Sometimes he doesn’t get around here until almost noon.”
“Jesus, you’re a wet blanket.”
“I’m simply telling you.”
Bill rolled over onto the bed. “Friday or Saturday or what, I’ve got to get out of here. But, first — ”
He took her arm, pulled her body over to him, and kissed her for a very long time.
“Oh God, Bill. Oh, God.”
“Baby, baby, baby!”
Later, still locked in each other’s arms, they fell asleep.
···
Millicent stirred, trying to shake the hand loose from her shoulder, but the hand was insistent, filled with strength, and every time she moved a sharp pain shot down into her arm.
“Cut it out,” she said.
The hand left her shoulder and seconds later she felt herself slapped across the face. “By damn,” Bill said, jumping up. Millicent opened her eyes. It was Andy.
“God damn you,” he was saying. “God damn you, you lousy, no-good slut!”
Strangely enough, she wasn’t afraid of him. She threw back her head and laughed.
“To hell with you,” she said.
When she saw the frantic efforts Bill was going through to get into his clothes she laughed all the more. There certainly wasn’t anything funnier than a naked man trying to get out of a strange bedroom.
Andy slapped her across the face again.
“This is certainly a fine homecoming,” he said, bitterly. “My wife and good friend in bed together.”
“Don’t act so hurt,” Bill advised him. Bill had struggled into his pants and now he was putting on his shirt.
