Chapter 12 – Derek

I haven’t been able to stop smiling all weekend. Ever since that night with Cara, it’s like I’m a new man. I have everything that I wanted. More than I could have imagined. And, damn, does it feel good.

I don’t talk to her on Sunday, but that’s okay. I know she probably needs time to process. Hell, I need time to process. That shit was intense. Touching her and feeling her come apart against me...fuck. It’s a feeling I always want to remember. So far, it’s looking as if it won’t be difficult to hang onto that memory since it’s been replaying itself in my brain and, to be honest, in my body, virtually nonstop.

So walking into work on Monday, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see her. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t dying to see her. I would definitely be lying if I said I hadn’t been thinking about her all day and all night since our little soiree in the bathroom happened. I expect to get there first, make myself look presentable for her. I say hello to everyone I pass with a big smile as I enter the building and throw a nod Sharon’s way when I get to the firm. She waves back with a big happy smile. Then I greet and tease the interns in their cubicles, and I joke with the mail guy. I’m in a great mood. All is right with the world.

Until I walk into my office and see that Cara is already there, and her mood looks to be ...not so great. She practically skewers me with her sharp gaze, those beautiful shoulders squared and set like an unwilling soldier going into battle. She’s gripping a heavy black stapler in her hands as if her life depends on it, and her knuckles are white with the strain.

“Hey, you,” I say, trying to lighten the mood. “You gonna conk me of the head with that?”

She looks down at her hands gripping the stapler and flushes, setting the thing down on a file cabinet and snapping her head back up, stern eyes meeting mine, still no hint of humor or warmth. This is not how I pictured our first moments together post.... well, post whatever we might want to call that sexual conflagration on Saturday night.

Not to be put off, I come up close to her, ready to give her a kiss, but she plants a firm hand on my chest to stop me in mid-stride.

“Derek!” she scolds. “I told you...it can’t happen again.”

“Why not?” I ask. “You know how I feel about you. And now that I know how you feel about me…”

“Why not? How about because you’re my boss?” she bursts out. “How about because you’re my brother’s best friend? And, hey, how about because my parents would freak?”

“Hmm…” I think. “You do make some interesting points. But, as a counterpoint…” I lean down and kiss the spot behind her ear that I now know she goes wild for.
