Chapter Eleven

As Storm walked into the Homicide bullpen, she prayed that she wasn’t glowing from all the sex. God! She’d never felt this good, this happy—and the promise of being with both men at the end of the day… Fuck! Oh yeah, now she could see why it tended to be a man’s favorite word. She was having a hard time getting it off her mind…getting Tristan and Pierce and what they’d done together off her mind. But somehow she had to keep it contained, one little hint of a love life and she’d be in for some amazingly juvenile—though admittedly sometimes funny—teasing from the other detectives.

“Anything new?” she asked Brady as she plopped down in her chair and looked over their combined desks.

His gaze lingered a few minutes at chest level before lifting to meet hers, but in his case she didn’t suspect him of lechery. She knew he’d been staring at the Starbucks cup in her hand.

She shook her head and sighed. “Pass your cup and I’ll split the mocha with you.” He grinned and passed a coffee-stained mug. Storm frowned when she looked inside it. “When’s the last time you washed this thing?”

“I’m letting previous flavors enhance the current contents, kind of like chefs do with their cast iron skillets.”

Storm poured half of her Starbucks into the mug and handed it back to him. “Remind me never to eat at your place, Brady.”

Brady took a swallow of the coffee. “Anything good come out of your mystery meeting yesterday?”

The word come lingered in her mind and she felt like doing a little dance. She resisted the urge, but allowed herself a huge smile, knowing that Brady wouldn’t connect it with sex when she said, “Severn Damek.”

“Shit.” Brady straightened in his chair. “He’s after the chalice?”

“Has been for years. But I don’t think he’s behind this. In fact he reluctantly confessed that the police seem to be his best bet for locating it now.”

Brady’s eyes goggled. “Severn Damek—as in, that’s who you met last night?”

“Yeah.” She filled Brady in on the meeting, ending by passing him the photograph Severn had given her and saying, “Looks like we need to put more of a squeeze on the lawyer, or the insurer, and find out where VanDenbergh got the chalice. Could be as simple as whoever sold it to him, also stole it back. And we need to find out how VanDenbergh got it insured if it was known to be stolen.” She grinned. “Better pull out a peppermint. I’m getting ready to talk about politicians.”

Brady reached for a candy. “The senator?”

“Severn implied that there was something off about the value of the sword. His exact words were, I’m suggesting that its value is questionable, though I’m sure its worth is well documented.”

Brady crunched his candy with a thoughtful expression on his face. “Insurance fraud? Don’t need a body for that, though it does draw attention away from an insurance motive.”

“Yeah. I’ll pass the info on to Trace and Dylan.”

Brady shook his head.
