‘There are lots of girls outside,’ he replied.

‘No,’ I said. ‘There’s one in a red top and another in a blue-and-white striped jumper. Could you send them up to the room for a drink?’

He went out and invited them to come up, and we followed the same drinks-and-bedroom routine as before. This went on the whole time we were in Melbourne.

We used the code words ‘room service’ to get rid of the girls. Brian and I would say to each other: ‘Shall we order something from room service?’ ‘Yes, let’s.’ Then we’d say to them: ‘OK, girls, you’ve got to go. We want to get something up from room service.’
