I stayed off duty for the entire weekend and only called Gabe on the phone for updates. Another colleague, Andrew, covered my shifts after Bryan had told Gabe in very clear words that should I so much as show up at the safe house, he was going to give us the slip and would not come back. So it was Gabe and Andrew who took Bryan to a football match with his friends and watched over him during the party that followed.
Apart from that, the weekend was as quiet as anyone could have hoped for. Nothing happened. No more letters arrived and Bryan was perfectly tame and cooperative under Gabe and Andrew’s guard—so cooperative in fact that I seriously considered asking for the job to be reassigned. If my presence made the assignment harder for everyone, then my leaving would be in the team’s best interest. Doing so, however, would’ve raised questions. Questions I knew I had to avoid by all means since the answers were likely to cost me my job, so I kept my mouth shut.
I went back to the safe house on Monday evening after Gabe had said that there was no longer a murderous gleam in Bryan’s eyes whenever my name was mentioned. We both knew it wasn’t the wisest choice for me to be alone with Bryan for the night, but it couldn’t be helped. Gabe needed the night off and Andrew had been given a different assignment so unless I was willing to admit that I had a problem with Bryan, I had no choice but to keep up appearances and stay overnight.
But first we would have to make it through the evening. I picked up Bryan from the set. A brief “Hello” was all he said and I didn’t feel the need to start a conversation either, so we spent the ride in silence. At home, Bryan grabbed a bottle of water and an apple from the fridge and stalked off to his room. I didn’t hear anything from him until almost an hour later, when he went to the basement. Apparently he had decided to use the time for a workout in the built-in gym, which was fine with me. I’d settled on the sofa and was forcing myself to read a book but, altogether, passing the first part of the early evening was easier than I’d expected.
The ring of the doorbell made me almost jump out of my skin. My heart rate cranked up to a million beats per minute, and my ears were filled with the gushing noise of my blood. No one ever rang the doorbell because everyone who had a reason to come here had a key, and they all knew better than to arrive unannounced. Whoever this was, they had no business being here. Especially not at half past eight in the evening.
I couldn’t even remember having pulled my gun, but it was in my hand as I approached the door. I kept away
