Chapter Five
Seth gave Noah another kiss, not wanting their encounter to end any time soon. Content and happy with the knowledge that Noah was safe in his arms, he cherished those moments even more than the mind-blowing orgasms.
A soft knock on the door made them break apart. Noah gave him one more smile before calling, “Come in, it’s open.”
“I know, I just wanted to make sure you were done fucking,” Shane announced in a bored tone as he walked inside.
As always, as soon as the Leopard’s scent hit Seth, his hackles rose. It wasn’t as if Shane looked dangerous, quite the opposite. With curly sandy brown hair, big doe eyes and the softest features, he looked almost angelic. Even his build tended toward the small and slender side. He stood shorter than Noah and didn’t tip the scales at much more than one hundred and fifty. However, Shane happened to be the poster boy for the old cliché of looks can be deceiving. Under all that cute as bugness lurked a psycho that would make even Hannibal Lector shudder.
Of course Noah had a smile for the little crazy. “Hey, Shane. What can I do for you?”
Shane’s gaze flicked from Noah to Seth, almost as if he were sizing them up as potential threats or maybe targets. In the end, however, Shane returned the smile, if the expression on his face could even be called that. While his lips did curl up, the ice never left his eyes.
“I heard that you were the one to come to when it came to information on other species of shifters,” Shane replied, stepping closer.
Seth’s protective instincts kicked in, making him place himself between his mate and the Leopard.
Shane tilted his head to the side. “I would never harm Noah.”
“Really?” Seth replied, not bothering to mask the disbelieving tone in his voice.
“Of course not. Andrew likes him and he would be sad if Noah were hurt,” Shane replied simply as if that explained everything.
Seth noted that never once did it seem to occur to Shane that the real reason he shouldn’t hurt Noah would be because it was wrong or immoral.
God save them from Leopards. Seth wanted to believe that Shane’s mental condition wasn’t the norm, but when it came to Leopards, nothing could be further from the truth. That particular breed of feline had the notorious reputation of being batshit crazy and homicidal.
“What kind of shifter did you need information on?” Noah asked.
“Snakes. More specifically, Cobras.” Shane kicked one of the buttons scattering the floor, a small frown playing on his face.
Seth barely noticed, his blood having turned to ice at the word Cobra. If there was any shifter more feared than Leopards or Ravens, it was Cobras. Not only were they fast, but their bites contained venom nearly a hundred times stronger than their normal animal counterparts.
“You lost all your buttons,” Shane observed as he eyed up Noah’s gapping shirt. “If you want, I can sew those back on for you.”
“Ah, that’s okay. Seth already said he’d buy me a new one,” Noah hedged, pulling the shirt closed.
