Rush hour

I reached his house, and his mother met me at the door.

“Oh…He’s not here right now, but I told him to be home before ten, so he should be back soon”

She looked at the clock on the wall, which displayed 9:45.

“I can wait, it’s better than going to that apartment of mine”

She laughed and I smiled. That’s how small and cold the apartment was, it was a joke.

“Have you eaten? I can heat up some left-overs”

I shook my head and she went into the kitchen to make me a plate.

“What did you guys have?” I asked. I would eat whatever she gave me, but I was still curious.

“Lasagna”

She said that one word and I almost cried. Whoever said the way to a man’s heart was his stomach, they were damn right when it came to me. I was one to appreciate a good meal. It was mostly because I ate crap food most of the time, but also because I liked the feeling of being full of something that I knew would actually give my body nutrients. Dinner was delicious. I finished it quickly then washed my hands and face from the tomato sauce I spilt. Tari walked in, his face was solemn.

“Hey, you look like hell” I joked. He saw me and gave a weak smile. He faked it. He held his back pack in his hand, it looked like he would drop it. I took it from him and went to his room. He followed quietly.

“Hey,” I started. “What’s up?”

“I don’t think she wants me near her anymore. It’s like she gets upset when I’m with her for too long”

“Who, Lexi? Maybe it’s the season or something. I assume you’ve talked to her about this?”

He shook his head.

“Tari, you were supposed to talk about it”

“How can I? She’s not like you Vince, she won’t listen to me.”

He was literally having relationship problems, and I should have felt bad, but I didn’t. I wanted it to end. If only he felt the same way.

“She says she doesn’t want us to hang out anymore, you’re a bad influence on me”

My heart was struck.

“What? You’ve been pushing me away for the past month, and now we’re ending our friendship?”

I couldn’t believe it. Maybe David was right. I should tell him before it’s too late. Either lose him watching him go, or take a chance at love. I should’ve just thrown myself out there, whether I fell or not.

“I don’t want to end our friendship. She doesn’t have a right, you know that. I just want to figure out how to settle her down. Half the time she wants me to be under her constant supervision, and the other half she’s telling me to leave her alone for a while. I don’t get it”

He ran his fingers through his hair to smooth it from his eyes. He was handsome, even when he was upset.

“I really don’t know. I can’t tell you”

I sighed. I knew he could assert himself, but that didn’t comply with his personality.
