Someone had targeted Wallace Henedy’s defense attorney. Jake stared at the woman’s case files spread over her home office, but kept his paws off them. Client-attorney privilege was a damned real thing. And with Henedy’s association, he wasn’t going to be allowed to proceed on this case either.

Damn it.

They’d have to turn it over fully to Homicide. That was the last thing he wanted to do, but it was the way the game was played. MacGregor was taking over now.

She had been twenty-nine and engaged to a man in her office. Jake had been there when the fiance learned of her death.

Devastation. Utter devastation.

The man had lost his world tonight. Jake would never forget that.

They had a little girl together. Two years old, big dark eyes and dark silky curls. Hell, she’d reminded him of Izzie at that same age.

Her father had taken her out of the house tonight, back to his parents’. Because the baby’s mother would never be coming home again.

It had been the love in the man’s eyes that stuck with him the most.

He made it back to Shelby’s near three a.m.

Jake parked, then hurried up the sidewalk. He wanted to see her. Needed to.

He just needed to, tonight. Make sure she was ok, where she was supposed to be. Safe.

He’d sneak in and check on her while she slept. She’d never even know he was there. Just…he needed to look at her just once tonight.

Callum met him at the door at his text.

“She’s curled up in her study. Fell asleep about an hour ago. I think I made her nervous being here,” Callum said. “You good?”

“I’m off the case now. The woman was Henedy’s newest attorney. So I can’t officially touch it. Over to Homicide.”

“Shit. I’ve met her a time or two. Nice lady. Nice family.”

“I know. Saw them tonight myself.”

“I’m sorry. That sucks. Any leads?”

Jake shook his head. “I think it was contracted. Homicide is going to have to find out why. Major Crimes is off it. Back to…what we need to do.” Jake headed down the hall.

He needed to see her. Just look at her and know she was safe tonight.

“Pretty swanky place here,” Callum said quietly behind him. “Pretty quiet, too. I think it would drive me crazy. The quiet. I don’t even think there’s a TV on this floor. Piss-poor security, though. She needs a full-time security team, Jake. An actual bodyguard. Hell, that piano upstairs alone probably cost well over a quarter of a million. The paintings on the wall could finance Audrea’s full college education at an Ivy League. You might convince her to get a personal guard soon. Besides you.”

Jake barely listened to him. She had the doors to her office closed, but there were windows in the French doors that separated her from the rest of the first level. He could see her. Right there. Her arms pillowed her head.

Her hair was spread over her shoulders and hid her face from him.

Hell, she was gorgeous. Real. So damned real.
