Chapter Seven

Jonas gave CJ a hesitant smile and a brief nod. “I think you would have been okay. But I’m glad I was here to help.”

CJ ran a trembling hand through his hair. That was when Jonas noticed his ascot was loose and the second button on his blousy shirt was undone.

He supposed that thinking about almost dying could be as traumatic as actually almost dying. Either way CJ was a mess.

“What is going on down here?” Boo slammed out of the house her limp a little more pronounced as she cradled her arm to her chest. “I can’t get any sleep there’s so much commotion going on.”

No one had a chance to answer before CJ pulled himself together and charged toward his sister. “You act like you didn’t do this.” Thankfully he stopped inches before completely running her over.

Even though, she took two steps back and eyed him coolly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You tried to get back at me because you think I pushed you down the stairs.”

Boo looked to Chickie, but she was staring at her fingernails. Jonas couldn’t blame her. He didn’t want to be a part of this mess either. “What is he talking about?”

Jonas mulled over the benefits of answering versus not answering and decided to keep his mouth shut.

“I’m talking about locking me in the garage and starting one of the cars so I would get carbon monoxide poisoning!”

Boo cut her gaze back to Chickie. “Did he hit his head?”

Jonas shook his in answer. He figured that was safe enough.

“I’m serious!” CJ looked serious enough. In fact, he looked like he was about to have a heart attack. His face was red and his breathing labored.

As much is Jonas wanted to stay out of it, he had to get involved before someone got hurt. He gave Chickie a little nudge with his elbow then nodded toward CJ. Then he took Boo by the arm and led her back to the house. “I think you should lie down for a while longer.” He kept walking despite her protests.

“I’d really like to hear what CJ has to say.”

“This can be taken care of later. Everybody needs rest.”

Behind him he could hear Chickie saying something similar to CJ. Like Boo, he blustered a bit, but Jonas wasn’t stopping to see if any of it stuck. He had Boo by one arm, and he just kept walking.

Once he got her settled back into her room, he went back downstairs in search of Chickie. They hadn’t had any time to talk about that incredible kiss they had shared. He had needed a little time to think about it, not that he had time for that either, not between looking through racks of antiquated clothing and pseudo-murder attempts. His day had been a little full. Tomorrow they could start looking for clothing again. But it seemed as of right now Boo would have to have a completely new outfit to go to the evaluation. But he was done talking about Boo and CJ, even Jonathan and Arvie.
