The walk home actually took more like forty minutes, mostly because she ended up taking a few wrong turns. By the time she got to her apartment, the sun was going down and, although she was physically drained, her emotions and mind were still running on high. She had wavered between never wanting to see Sheena or any of the other girls from the firehouse again, to wanting to walk in, head held high, and just never speak to Sheena again unless she had to. Either way, finding Sheena sitting in front of her door was the last thing she wanted.

Sheena stood when Violet approached. She was still wearing her gym clothes and had her bag sitting at her feet. Obviously she had come straight here, but why? Did she have some other orders for Violet?

“I told you—no more hissy fits.”

“Fuck you,” Violet said, throwing her bag down. Anger flooded her and she suddenly didn’t care about anything except making Sheena feel as shitty as she’d made her feel. “You don’t own me, Sheena. You don’t even know me. You just fucked me. Yeah, it was great, but no better than anyone else could have done. I don’t owe you a damn thing, Sheena, so get the fuck up off my doorstep and go home. I’m not interested in your hissy fit.”

“My…? Oh, you ungrateful…! You loved every second of our time together! You were weak and shaking when I touched you and commanded you. Don’t stand there and act like I was doing something you didn’t fucking love, Violet.”

A door opened across the hall. An old woman looked at them both with wide eyes and an open mouth, then hurriedly shut the door and locked it.

“Get out of my way. If you think you have something to say to me, say it inside. I don’t need the neighbours listening in,” Violet said, picking up her bag and shoving past Sheena to unlock her door.

Sheena followed, slamming the door behind her. “Yeah, I have something to say.”

Violet turned and faced Sheena, hands on her hips, her breath coming in pants because she was so angry. “What is it?”

“I-I’m sorry.”

Violet let her mouth fall open, shocked. Her hands fell away from her hips and she stared at Sheena, speechless.

“I shouldn’t have taken my anger out on you.”

“Damn right, you shouldn’t have,” Violet said, regaining her composure somewhat.

Sheena stepped forward and reached a hand out, but dropped it before she touched Violet. “I don’t know how to do this.”

“Do what—apologise?”

“Start a real relationship, keep it and make it work.”

“What the fuck, Sheena? I don’t get you, and honestly I think I’m too tired tonight to try.”

“Don’t,” Sheena pleaded, her eyes soft and her shoulders slumped. She looked at Violet with such sadness in her face.

“What?”

“I just… Fuck, I want something from you, something real. I just don’t know how to do it.”

“Talk to me, Sheena. Make me not want to kick your ass out of here right now.”

“May is a bitch…”

“Yeah, I think we covered that already.
