When Graham awoke the next day, it was Monday, but he was ready. It was a new day, a new life, and if he played his cards right, he had a new man, one he hoped to keep. After all, he’d had the weirdest fucking dream about him. That was a sign, right?

In the meantime, he needed to get to work. This was good. He had a job he was able to work on his own time, make his own schedule. There was no pressure, just the ability to do what he loved when he wanted to.

His first job that day was repairing a washer, and it had been easy. The best thing was the woman herself. She’d been so grateful when he left. A single parent with five kids, she didn’t have time to wash clothes by hand. Her kids had school, and she needed to get them there. So, when he stood in her kitchen after being directed to the washer, she left. He’d shaken his head and gotten to work. When she got back, she’d fallen into a seat in the kitchen exhausted to see that not only was the washer fixed, the clothes were folded and on the table, and the dishes left behind were clean and put away.

She’d cried, great heaving sobs, and Graham just held her. Later, she’d given him a large tip along with a thick slice of apple pie.

That day, he’d fixed a bike, repaired a doghouse, and installed a refrigerator. And everyone he helped was happy. There was no one shooting at him, no bodies in the desert, and no bombs.

He was needed for an entirely different reason, and it felt good.

By lunchtime, his phone was ringing. Kamau. The day was better already.

“Hi, sailor.”

“Army, Kamau. I was Army.”

“Whatever. Are you hungry?”

Graham thought back to his dream and asked nervously, “Would it be okay to say I hunger for more?”

“Oh, yes, Graham. Yes, please. Meet me for lunch. Dinner will be at my place.”

Lunch at Sisters Three was just as unusual as the first time. The moment he walked in, he was greeted with a hug from not one but all the sisters. Before he considered the menu, there was an order of cinnamon French toast, two eggs scrambled with bacon and a large glass of orange juice, placed in front of him.

He would deny to anyone who asked that his eyes were wet with tears. The tea he drank after the meal was as good as the last time—with Kamau observing him carefully. When Graham asked why he was staring, it seemed Kamau was doing a bit of denying too.

Later, after having picked up some clothes from David and Louis’s, he stood in the kitchen enjoying the sight of Kamau Anderson cooking. Graham talked about his day, about the woman with the five kids, the four-year-old boy who gave him a whole dollar for fixing his bike, and the repairs he’d made to a snake habitat.

“Hmm, sounds like you had a good day,” Kamau said as he stirred the sauce in a pot.
