Chapter 18

There was still the matter of Amy Davis’s death, Rae thought sadly as she showered. Sarah had gone home, only to change, and Rae grinned like a schoolgirl thinking about her. Then she shook her head and got back to Amy.

Someone killed her, she knew it. There were just too many coincidences. Her apartment ransacked, someone rattling Rae’s brains. Even Lieutenant McGrath thought there was something.

As she dressed, she thought of Pam. Something was up with that one. She was just a bit too possessive for Rae’s liking. The past few times she’d seen her and Jane, Jane seemed on edge. Maybe it was this whole mess, and maybe it was a little more.

She sat at her dining room table and tried to sort out some of the other mess she had going with ComTele. She rummaged through the employee files, trying to concentrate. However, the recollection of the morning’s activities happily invaded her senses. She chuckled out loud and tossed down her pen. “I can’t concentrate. That chick has me all turned around.”

Then she saw it. She cocked her head and pulled out the file from the bottom of the pile. “No way,” she said in amazement.

Michael M. Porter, the file name read. Rae blinked a couple of times. In the distance, she heard her doorbell ring. She went quickly to the door and opened it. It was Sarah, smiling.

“Good afternoon. Didn’t I just see you this morning?” she exclaimed happily, then frowned as Rae stood there, looking at the file.

“Hi, Professor,” she said absently and walked away.

“Hi, Professor? Is that all I get?” She followed Rae into the dining room.

Rae turned to her and smiled. “Hey. When did you get here?” she asked jokingly, and Sarah glared at her. “Now that’s the look I’m getting to know. What have I done?”

Sarah stood there with her hands on her hips. Rae looked nervously around the room, wondering what happened.

“Hi, Professor?” Sarah repeated.

Rae turned five shades of red and smiled sheepishly. “I, well, I found something here and…I’m sorry. You’ll have to know sooner or later. In the navy, when I’d get in a groove, I’d get preoccupied. I’m sorry.” She winced apologetically.

Sarah softened and pulled her tall frame down to her, kissing her deeply. “I forgive you. Now what did you find?”

Rae smiled and returned her kiss. “I don’t know yet. Sit.” She pulled out a dining room chair. Sarah took off her coat, and Rae sniffed the air.

“Geezus, what are you wearing? This will never do. It’s much too distracting,” she said seriously.

“Good,” Sarah said, happy with herself, and settled in. “Oh, I brought lunch and...dinner. Just in case we don’t get out of the house,” she said with a wicked grin.

Rae laughed and picked up the grocery bags and took them into the kitchen. “Take a look at the top file,” Rae called from the kitchen as she put away the groceries. She noticed the bread and lunch meat and decided she was ravenous.

Sarah looked at the pile and picked up the file in question.
