The mathematics collection was categorically not what she liked about math, but like a historical overview of humans learning to count better and better over time. It was intriguing in its own right, and when she’d taken a few shots of code-breaking equipment as well as an ancient slide-rule, she stopped resisting the impulse to swipe to Kristen’s contact. She could send these, and it wouldn’t mean anything, and it wouldn’t even really require words, but it might get Kristen to send some back, which might then give her an opportunity...

Like anyone else with a natural inclination towards math, she knew how to play chess and was good at it, and this was a good opening move for white. Whatever Kristen did in response, it would slightly change the board, and there’d be a next step from there.

She’d wandered over into the ‘math art’ gallery—Crockett Johnson having painted mathematical theorems, which, if she squinted, she could sort of identify—by the time her phone vibrated, and she laughed at what definitely weren’t words, but was a very apropos response: Kristen having lined up a set of toothpicks to spell out 1+1=2.
