Chapter Twenty-Seven
Details of the Driver Swing
Ok, let’s take a closer look at the driver swing, section by section.
The Starter Motion
If you watch the pros in person or on TV or on a computer video, you will notice that before they start to bring the driver back, they undertake some sort of motion with the club head, such as lifting it up and putting down on the ground a couple of times, or even some motion with the body. Justin Thomas, in the video referenced above, turns his head back a couple of inches; watch it and look for it. The purpose of the starter motion is to get your hands and arms and shoulders and hips loose and your mind mentally set for the beginning of the big swing. You can do anything you like for this purpose, invent your own motion. Co-Author Paul Steward has a complex series of moves. He begins with a little rocking motion back and forth from right foot to left foot, then a back and forth waggle with the club head to get a feel for the direction he wants the club to lead back from the ball, then a slight forward press of the hands–and game on!
Bill has a very simple motion. He presses his back foot very slightly into the ground, signally to the brain that a weight shift is about to occur. Just a slight pressing down of that right foot. Then a second later—Boom—the swing begins.
A move you might consider when you have reached the stage where you are trying to improve your swing by improving your backswing is to take the club back until the club head is above your waist, doing so in the angle you are trying to achieve in your back swing. That’s usually an inside angle to defeat a slice or a pull, so turn your belt buckle backwards somewhat. Do two or three of these rehearsal starts, to get the angle ingrained. Then do your real take away and hit your tee shot.
