The first thing I realized when we reached the French restaurant was that Joe was an expert driver. The streets of the neighborhood the restaurant was located in were so narrow, one had to basically scale the walls to get through without running into oncoming traffic. By some miracle, we found a parking spot in a lot smaller than my closet back home and Joe crammed the car in between two large pickup trucks. As we walked from the lot to Le Petit Elephant, I made a note of small shops selling handmade jewelry I wanted to stop in at after we were done.

As the street narrowed further, I found myself navigating past a lumbering van emerging from the opposite side. Amidst the bustle, my gaze wandered to the right, where Le Petit Elephant stood like an oasis amidst the chaos. The quaintness of the scene was almost palpable, as if plucked from a storybook.

The restaurant’s front patio, a cozy enclave barely spacious enough for two petite round tables, was held up by sturdy columns, one of which proudly displayed an intricately designed menu. Beyond the threshold, the shuttered doors beckoned invitingly, their opening a welcome for all.

Taking a moment to absorb the scene, I couldn’t help but grin at the sight that greeted me. The walls, painted in a soft, muted yellow hue, served as a canvas for exquisite Renaissance artwork. Cherubs frolicked amidst idyllic landscapes, while scenes of sun-drenched picnics exuded an air of timeless leisure.

My eyes wandered to the left, drawn to a patisserie-style display brimming with an array of delectable treats, each one a scrumptious temptation. Behind this culinary spectacle, another room lay concealed behind yet another shuttered door—undoubtedly the heart of the establishment, the kitchen.

My eyes spotted a glass cellar with rows of delectable wine, and I nudged Joe with my elbow. “This place is adorable.”

“Agreed,” he said. He scanned the seating area, his chin tipping lightly in the direction of a middle-aged man dressed in an expensive, well-tailored suit. “That’s our guy.”

I watched from the patio as Fallon Boatman perused the menu in front of him. His gelled hair was slicked back and stood so high up off his head that it appeared to be levitating. If I didn’t know better, I’d guess he was a warlock and magic was involved. Just to be sure, I checked for a talisman, but found none.

The developer looked at the screen of his phone and his eyes rolled skyward. He typed out a quick message and let out a frustrated sigh, then proceeded to rattle off his order to the server who was waiting patiently at the table.

My eyes flicked to Joe. “A real winner, huh?”

“Let’s get a table and get this over with.”

After requesting a seat toward the rear, strategically positioned next to Fallon, we were graciously escorted to our table, where menus awaited us. Each page made me smack my lips in delight, detailing specials crafted to tempt. Despite having indulged in a meal merely an hour ago, my mouth watered uncontrollably as I scanned the list.
