JULIAN

The phone’s never-ending ring woke me at ten in the morning. I groaned and pulled my hand across my eyes. The last three sleepless nights without Kendra, as I planned how to get away from here, had been torturous. The night after the barbecue, I’d snuck into her room and watched her sleep. An urge to climb underneath the covers and fuck her silly right underneath Jake’s roof drew all my blood south, but I didn’t. Instead, I watched her toss and turn, then left before the sun came up.

Jake met with my father, Gabe, and Julian on Monday, and I’d heard nothing since.

“Morning. What’s up?”

“What the fuck happened between you and Jake last weekend?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “He walked in on Kay giving me a blow job.”

“Fuck, Julian. He compromised the entire operation.”

“What?”

“He was snooping around After Eve, and surveillance cameras picked him up at Scar’s strip-club talking to Martinez. If he fucks this up for us, Kay won’t be the only one in trouble.”

“I know, I know. Is Gabe making a move today?”

My cousin had undertaken the case against Martinez and Donaldson along with his wife, Joanne. From what I’d been told, Martinez was recruiting women with a sex-trafficking intent, and Donaldson along with Hartley were paying him the big bucks. Gabe had secured a warrant for Martinez’s arrest.

“They’re out in the field already. They finally found a cell. Thirty women.”

“You guys need my help?”

“No, you’re too involved.”

“I know. I know.”

“Julian, Jake also fired Silver Securities.”

I’d expected Jake’s retaliation, but I never thought he would compromise his daughter’s safety. If he’d stoop this low, he’d go after my family next, which meant I couldn’t afford to see Kendra again.

“Did you double up the files?” I asked.

“You know I did.”

“Good. I want to keep up the surveillance on her. And make sure she doesn’t get with Jace.”

“He’s the one who led us to the cell.”

“What?”

“He came to talk to me after the barbecue. He’s not a bad guy, but he hangs with the wrong crowd.”

“Which is exactly why Kendra shouldn’t be around him.”

“We’ll do our best. Are you still going to New Zealand?”

“Flying out this afternoon.” I glanced over at my suitcase. “I don’t have another choice. Staying here, with her so close and not being able to touch her, is too hard. And I have a fresh case, so New Zealand will keep me busy.”

“We’ll miss you.”

The only person I worried about missing me was Kay.

“Thanks. Maybe Jake and Ash are right. She needs a normal life. We’ll get Martinez, and once Donaldson goes behind bars, she’ll be free.”

“We’re still looking for Wright. He’ll testify for Kendra and against Donaldson. We just need to find him.”

“How do you lose a witness?”

“Jake spooked him, and he’s gone incognito.”

“Isn’t he supposed to stay under the radar? What the fuck is he doing?”

“I don’t know, but that’s why I called. You need to talk to him before you leave. He can’t keep blabbing about Silver Securities.”

“I’ll stop by their house before I leave.
