Chapter 7
The alarm, as predicted, rang much too early. Alexis turned it off, crawled out of bed and turned on the stereo. Melissa Etheridge’s melodic voice drifted out of the speakers as Alexis did a few morning stretches. Last night had gone better than she’d expected, though Elana had left immediately after their bath. The bath had definitely gone beyond a PG-rated experience, and she’d ended it more wet than when she’d started. The image of Elana, buck naked, toeing the water to test the warmth kept replaying in her mind. She had several other nice images to reflect on the next time she took a bath alone. Even if they soaped their own backsides and touched nothing more than lips, she had enjoyed sharing the space in the dirty bath water.
After dressing for work and making a quick breakfast, Alexis headed out to start her day. She met Darcy in the hallway again. Darcy was dressed up in a slick-cut beige suit and a pair of heels. Her usual authoritative presence was nearly doubled in this outfit, and Alexis had to forcibly stop herself from staring.
“Good morning,” Darcy said cheerfully.
Alexis nodded and murmured something close to a reply. “Hmm, oh yeah, morning.”
“You look like you could use some coffee,” Darcy suggested as they started down the stairs.
Say something intelligent, Alexis pleaded silently. Instead she said, “Yeah, guess so. Running late though.”
They stepped off the last stair and Darcy handed Alexis her thermos. “Here, have a sip. I make a mean cup of Java that can combat any level of sleep deprivation.” When Alexis gave her a hesitant look, she insisted. “It’ll at least get you started. I wouldn’t want any packages to be late just because of a late night and a caffeine shortage.”
Alexis took the thermos and had a sip, wondering how Darcy knew that she’d had a late night. Maybe she’d seen Elana leave? The coffee was good, strong and not a bit bitter. “Thanks. That’s perfect.”
Darcy nodded. “No problem. I’m driving into work today, so you’ll have to keep the bus driver in line without me.” She waved goodbye. “Have a good day.”
Alexis watched her head for the parking garage, thinking that they had come very close to a real conversation. Maybe there was hope. She saw the bus pull up across the street and had to run to catch it, stopping the train of thought that was examining her interactions with Darcy. She wanted to get to know Darcy, but the damn crush had her too intimidated to even enjoy a sip of coffee with her.
“Are you in line?”
Alexis shook her head and stepped aside to let a brunette woman with tight curls step up to the counter. The hair salon was busy this afternoon. She’d hoped to just drop off the delivery and run on to the next one, but the manager who normally handled the styling product orders was out on a break. “She’ll be back in five,”
the receptionist had chirped. The main reason Alexis had wanted to make this a quick stop was to avoid another meeting with Tina.
