Chapter Seven

Moose’s breath caught as the thick forest trees thinned and a flash of moonlight illuminated the valley below them. They had crested the top of the mountains already and were headed down the hill into Cade Creek, but the view was far more than he ever expected or could have dreamed.

Having lived his entire life in the city, Moose had only seen places like this in movies and books. He never thought he’d actually see such a picturesque place in real life, or be moving there.

There weren’t a ton of lights on in the valley, but enough to tell there was a small town located below. Moose could see a few lights farther out and around the basin, and a couple higher on the surrounding mountains.

He couldn’t image what the place looked like in the winter time, covered in snow. He hoped he was going to be there long enough to find out.

“We’re almost there,” Cory said, lacing their fingers together over the top of Matty’s car seat, something they’d had to buy before they left town. Carla hadn’t provided one.

Carla hadn’t provided him with a lot of things. Moose was starting to see that he would need to find a job right away. He was still reeling from just how much stuff Matty needed. It was a crap ton.

The trees thickened up as they drew closer to the bottom of the mountain, obscuring Moose’s view, but once they reached the valley floor, the trees thinned again and became farmland. Houses dotted the landscape here and there, surrounded by pastures and farmland.

By the time they reached the outskirts of the town, Moose was pretty sure he had never seen a prettier place, and he still hadn’t seen it during the daytime. He couldn’t wait to explore it all.

“I have a small apartment a block off main street,” Cory said. “It isn’t much, but it’s clean and well maintained.” Cory grinned widely. “And I have my own bathroom.”

“You’re gonna have to talk to Chester about renting one of his bigger apartments,” Aldrin said from the front seat. “Two of you living in that small apartment would have been hard enough. With the baby added into the mix, you’re going to need more room.”

“I can’t afford a bigger place,” Cory said quickly. “Even if Moose finds a job right away, the baby needs things, a lot of things. Carla gave us some, but not nearly enough.”

Moose glanced between the two men, and then to Jonah, who was driving. He didn’t want Cory to go without because of him or Matty.

“I saw the bags Yuval brought back to the diner. There wasn’t enough stuff to care for Matty for a week.” Aldrin’s face set into a deep frown. “How that woman thought it was okay to just dump a kid on you out of the blue, and then not provide anything for him, I’ll never know.”

Moose didn’t know why he felt the need to speak up for Carla—maybe because she was the mother of his son—but he did.
