CHAPTER 18

The next morning the phone rang in the apartment. Laura picked up the phone. “Dana?”

“No, it’s Laura.”

“Oh, Laura. Can I speak with Dana?” Eve asked.

Laura put the phone down and went in search of Dana. She found her in the kitchen pouring herself a cup of coffee. “Eve is on the phone.”

Dana’s shoulders slumped. “Okay. I’ll pick it up in here.” She moved to the phone and Laura left the room. “Hello.”

“Are you still mad at me?” Eve asked as a click sounded on the line. “Did you hang up?”

“No. I think that was Laura hanging up the other phone.”

“So?”

“I’m not mad at you, Eve. I’m mad that you didn’t think it was important to tell me you were a pillow queen,” Dana said a little too forcefully.

Pillow queen? Laura’s mind said. What the hell is that?

“I didn’t think it would matter, Dana. I wasn’t trying to keep something from you.”

Dana sighed. “Well it does matter to me, Eve.”

“So you don’t want to see me again?” Eve asked close to tears.

“I’m sorry, Eve, but it could never work out with us,” Dana answered honestly.

“Are you sure, Dana? I really liked you,” Eve insisted.

“I’m sure. Good bye, Eve.” Dana returned the receiver back on the wall phone.

Laura found Dana just sitting at the kitchen table staring into space. She reached for Dana’s coffee cup, filled it, and placed it in front of her.

Dana slowly lifted her eyes. “Thanks.”

Laura took a seat at the other end of the table. “What’s a pillow queen?”

Dana looked up and laughed. “I guess you heard that?”

“I couldn’t miss it. You practically yelled it and I’ve never heard the term.”

Dana looked up at Laura. “A pillow queen is a lesbian who wants to be made love to, but won’t reciprocate.”

“Well, that’s just rude,” Laura said matter-of-factly.

Dana laughed again. “For me it was.”

“Why would someone they care for not want their lover to be happy too?”

“I don’t know, Laura. There are lesbians who will only make love to their partners, but won’t allow the woman to touch them. They’re called stone butch.”

Laura shook her head. “So why didn’t Eve date one of those women?”

“Maybe because they’re too butch.”

“You mean mannish?” Dana nodded. “Why would she think you were a stone butch? You are feminine, Dana. Not overtly, but enough for no one to think you are a man.”

“Thanks, I guess,” Dana said with a chuckle.

“I thought the straight world was complex,” Laura shook her head, “This is so over my head.” Dana chuckled again. “How about getting out of here and go have some lunch?”

Dana nodded. “Then you can tell me all about your blind date.”

“Oh brother.”

“Fair is fair.”

Dana had just walked into the apartment on Wednesday afternoon when she heard the phone ringing. She put down the bags of groceries that were in her hands and lifted the receiver in the kitchen. “Hello.”

“Hi, Dana. It’s Eve. How are you?”

“I’m fine, Eve.” Dana couldn’t help but roll her eyes wondering what Eve wanted.

“Will you give me a second chance, Dana? I promise I’ll change,” Eve asked, trying not to beg.
