Chapter Four

Spring Rain

As four o’clock struck on the first Friday afternoon in April, David Lawrence exited his office, briefcase in hand. Pausing before the frosted glass door of his neighbor, Paula Rohan, he drew a sheet of paper from his breast pocket, scanned it for the twentieth time, folded it back up and knocked.

The comely guidance counselor invited him in. She was seated behind her large desk, a daintily voluptuous blonde of thirty, with the complexion of a shepherdess-Venus from 17th Century oil. In her divinely feminine presence, David’s pulse began to quicken.

“Oh, hello David,” Paula trilled, loading her expensive leather satchel with all manner of things. “Feel free,” she pushed an ashtray toward him as he took a seat opposite her.

“Thanks. Paula, I need some advice.”

“From me?”

“One of the girls has sent me a mash note and I don’t know how to respond.”

“Well, how do you normally respond?” Paula leaned forward to light his cigarette with a heavy marble lighter that one of the pupils had given her for Christmas.

“Thanks. How do you know it’s happened before?” He pulled out the note. Paula smiled, for David Lawrence was a male she was greatly disposed to admire. “I never know how to respond,” he admitted. “So I was wondering whether the school had a policy on such matters.”

“May I see?” Paula extended one perfectly manicured, be-ringed and braceleted hand for the letter. David gave it to her and she read it aloud.

“To Mr. Lawrence,

As you in the classroom stand

I fixate on your slender hand

Winding in my long, black hair

Stripping me completely bare–”

Paula raised her periwinkle eyes. “This is pretty hot stuff.” “It gets better,” he replied. She continued reading,

“As your dulcet tones reveal

What makes Captain Ahab feel

What makes John the Savage weep

And old Goriot so cheap–

In my Powerbook I note

Why upon your face I dote

Why your voice gives me a thrill

Why you leave me with no will.

No Raskolinov am I

To cause anyone to die

Would it matter quite so much

If your lithe form I did touch?

I would wear a letter red

If you’d let me give you head–

Memorize Eugene Onegin

If you’d treat me like a pagan

Don wool jammies with a flap

But to grind upon your lap.”

Paula paused to grin at David then continued reading,

“Gertrude was wanton in Hamlet

I truly long to be your pet

Lysastrada bartered sex

(My pedigree is double X)

With just three months left to the year

I must make myself clear

Please grant the boon I crave

And let me be your slave.

“My,” said Miss Rohan, handing the page back to David with reverence. “Did she manage to reference every book you assigned this semester?”

“Uh huh.”

“Lupe Freeman, eh?” Paula called up the student’s record on her computer. “Oh, delightful!” Paula clapped her hands, “You must have been born under a lucky star.”

“Why? What do you see?”

“Lupe Freeman turns eighteen tomorrow.”

“That’s great, but there’s still the question of how to react. The last time this happened I simply stopped talking to the girl until after graduation. Do you think that I should do the same thing here?”

“Why bother?” Paula shrugged.
