“How are you doing?” Trina asked when I called her. I could hear noises in the background. She was probably walking across campus somewhere on her way to a class. I knew she was busy. I hated to interrupt her. But I missed our time together.

When we’d both been in college at the same university, we’d met for coffee or lunch several times a week. Since then we’d slowly grown apart—me by graduating and Trina by staying to work on her doctorate.

“Good. I’m sketching again.” I wandered out onto my balcony.

“That’s great. Anything cool?”

“I did my first human the other day actually.”

“Really? Who?”

“His name is Bryon. I’m sort of dating him.” That sounded lame. I was totally dating Bryon, unless sleeping with a guy was the only qualification for dating status consideration.

“Sort of dating him?” Trina giggled.

“Totally seeing him. I mean, we see each other a few times a week. He’s busier than I am.”

“Honey, everyone is busier than you,” she teased.

“True.” I had to laugh with her on that one.

“What does he do?”

“He’s an accountant.”

“How boring.”

“Yeah, that’s what he says too.” My turn to laugh.

“Where did you meet him?”

“On the beach.” I stared out at the courtyard as I answered.

“So, he’s a beach bum when he isn’t crunching numbers.”

“Hardly. He’s pale. I don’t think he sees much sun. Though I do believe he has put some color on his skin since I met him.” And muscle too, she thought not for the first time. He never mentioned going to a gym and she had no idea how he might have time to do so, but she was certain the man was growing more buff by the week.

“But you sketched him? That must have been weird.”

“It was, but it turned out fantastic. Bryon loves it. It’s sitting in my kitchen still on the easel. Every time I glance at it, I get goosebumps.”

The background noise got quieter. Trina must have made it to a classroom or her office. “Because your work is that good, or because your man is that sexy?” She giggled again.

“A little of both. Damn, he’s hot. Blond hair. Green eyes you can get lost in.” I sighed.

“So what’s the problem?”

“No problem.”

“Hon, I’ve known you for years. You didn’t call me in the middle of the day to tell me your life was perfect.”

Shit. She was probably right. I hadn’t thought about the reason for my call. I chewed on my bottom lip for a moment, thinking. “I guess I’m holding myself back.”

“That’s understandable. You’ve been through a lot, Jessa. Don’t beat yourself up. Take your time.”

I nodded, but a tear slipped down my cheek. “How will I know when it’s the right time?”

“Oh, honey, you’ll just know. When you’re ready, it will all fall into place. Don’t stress over it. Sounds like Bryon is a nice guy.”

“Yeah. Maybe too nice.”

Trina’s chuckle made me smile. “You like nice guys. You’ve never been the type to sleep around. Don’t turn this into something bigger than it has to be.
