CAPITOL HILL RESIDENCES, 1909. This scene shows another prosperous early Seattle neighborhood. Note again the large attractive homes, curbs and sidewalks, and landscaped planter strips. The streets are still unpaved in this image. Capitol Hill is immediately east of downtown and was easily accessible for early Seattle residents. (Courtesy author’s collection.)

OLD AND NEW CITY HALLS, 1909. Between 1891 and 1909, the Seattle city offices occupied the former King County Courthouse on Third Avenue between Yesler Way and Jefferson Street. The previous city hall burned down in the Great Fire of 1889. The 1891–1909 location earned the name of “Katzenjammer Castle” for its hodgepodge of multiple additions. (Courtesy Dan Kerlee.)
