Why do I need a pennel rig? The reason is that it’s not easy to put on large bait without it balling up round the shank of the hook. Elasticated cotton can do the trick in some cases, but for large squid and cuttlefish bait for instance, the pennel rig is the answer. Many anglers like to put on several squid when they go cod fishing in the winter. The bait can be threaded on the bottom hook and then the top hook is fixed in position by turning the trace line round the hook shank. The hook is then pushed through the tail end of the squid holding it in that position as it’s dropped to the bottom.
