Denali had thought he’d have a few days before his punishment, probably plenty of time for Clyde to get his message and figure out a way to get him out of the mess. But that wasn’t to be the case apparently, because he only had a day to rest up before his dad came for him at dawn the following day. With one of his uncles on either side of him holding his arms, Denali was dragged from the house.

He didn’t ask what was going on. He didn’t need to. With all of his family on the front lawn, including many of his cousins, he knew exactly what was coming. He didn’t fight as he was tossed onto the grass. But from his left, Noah was fighting plenty as he kicked out at their uncle, who was holding him tightly. Before he could start yelling, Denali decided to stop him. Noah couldn’t get in trouble too just because Denali had gone against their family. “Noah! Stop it. Calm down. It’ll be okay.”

But Noah wasn’t that easy to calm down. “How? Tell me how you being whipped is going to be okay!” He didn’t get to say anything else, though, as their uncle clamped his hand over Noah’s mouth, silencing him.

Someone cut Denali’s hands free and he stretched his arms forward over the cool grass as relief began flooding into them. He had red marks around his wrists, which wasn’t much of a surprise. The sound of his father’s belt slipping free of his pants made him close his eyes and try not to fight the pain he knew was coming. It wasn’t his first time being punished, but he had a pretty good idea of how much worse this time would be compared to the others. This wasn’t about lying when he’d taken four candy bars instead of just one. Or the time he’d punched his cousin for being a jerk to him, then blamed another of his cousins. This was serious. He’d gone against his family and mated with a bear. He only wished Noah would stop struggling before he got hurt.

His dad stepped closer and Denali leaned forward far enough his forehead touched the grass. He kept his arms stretched out in front of them, grateful for the chance to move them again. “My son has disgraced us. Turned on us. And shamed us. He is unfit to call himself an otter. He has committed a very grievous crime. He has mated with a bear. But this, what will be done here this morning, in view of everyone in our family, will cleanse him of that crime. He’ll be welcomed back with open arms.”

The first strike came down hard across his back, and Denali knew without question his father was using the buckle as the cold metal bit into his skin with striking ferocity. He cried out and shuddered under the pain, but he hardly had a chance to process the pain of the first strike before the next one came down just as brutally as the first.
