Angeline fought to keep her eyes open to hear the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, but it was a valiant effort. She nodded off right after the part where Elizabeth stood up to Darcy’s aunt.

Caitriona watched her sleep, the way the fire illuminated her soft features highlighting the innocence that lay there. She couldn’t understand how anyone could bear to hurt her. She pulled her closer to her chest, and Angeline made a humming sound in the back of her throat. Even when deep in sleep, a small smile made its way to her lips.

She traced her eyes, the arch of her nose, her soft cheeks, the proud jaw, and finally she stopped at her lips. Those full bubble-gum lips that could bring her to her knees in an instant, or have her on the edge of her seat. Caitriona gently tucked Angeline’s hair behind her ears and placed a feather-light kiss on the side of her head.

“I’m sorry, Angeline,” she whispered, knowing that Angeline couldn’t hear her. “I’m not going anywhere. I will do better.”

Carefully, she laid Angeline’s head on the pillow, and Angeline immediately curled into her side. Caitriona smiled at that. Even in her sleep, Angeline’s instinct was to seek her out. It made Caitriona’s heart burst with joy.

She carefully disentangled herself from Angeline’s grasp and went to stand by the window. She wished that she was as forgiving as Angeline, but she wasn’t. She was still incredibly mad at herself for not noticing what was going on sooner. Every time she’d try to calm herself down, the image of Angeline lying on the floor, spitting out blood and defiantly standing up to Colton, made her want to hurt him.

Her eyes traveled upwards, seeking out the solace and clarity of the night sky. She began to count backward until her breathing evened out, and her heart rate went back to normal.

Anger wouldn’t do her any good.

More importantly, it wouldn’t do Angeline any good.

She needed to come up with a practical plan to get them all out of here. She had been so wrong about Colton, and it was inconceivable to think it possible to stay in this house under his reign of terror any longer.

For now, though, they would have to stay put.

Asking Angeline to steal into the night, to put up with hunger, cold and the uncertainty of life on the streets was one thing. However, asking her mother, an old woman, and her two young sisters to do the same was too cruel.

Colton wouldn’t hurt them.

At least, she prayed he wouldn’t.

In the meantime, she would keep an eye on Angeline, redirect Colton’s anger elsewhere until she had a good solid plan. She let out a frustrated breath as she realized that she truly had no idea what to do, or who to turn to for help.

Her head whipped to the side as she heard a noise coming from below. She peeked out over the ledge, and caught a flash of something hurrying across the lawn.
