Chapter 6

“YOU SURE go out of your way to avoid me since you lost the argument,” I snapped at Toby the moment I found him, kneeling and busy with repairs on the infrared sauna. He wore only shorts and a T-shirt, with no shoes or socks, and he had never looked more delicious.

Well, perhaps he had the night we made love.

Toby looked up, his mind obviously somewhere else because he blinked a couple of times. Then his features hardened, that stubborn jut of his chin present, and he looked back down at what he was doing, pointedly ignoring me.

“Don’t pretend like I’m not here,” I said with a growl as I walked into the room.

“You’re this close to getting banned from Hot Haven.” Toby brought his hand up to show a miniscule distance between his thumb and forefinger.

Wounded to the core, I braved on. How could he be so cold to me when all I wanted was to help? “You do what you want. I can’t stop you.” I heard the crack in my own voice, and the sting of unshed tears was beginning to blur my vision.

Toby looked up, surprised, and then his expression softened as remorse and concern arose to replace the icy starkness. “Shawn, I… I’m sorry.”

Slowly, I approached him, dropped down on my butt next to him, and nodded in acknowledgment. “Me too.” I stared at my hands, fidgeting, and worried my lip. “I don’t want us to fight.”

“Me neither.” Toby sighed, put his tools down, and sat down as well. “I’m never going to ban you, you know that. You’re my best customer. Without you here, I’d be out of business in two days.” He smiled tentatively and chuckled without much humor, but I got the message.

“There aren’t enough locks in the world to keep me out if you did ban me,” I joked as well, trying to go back to the easy rapport we’d had before.

I looked around. There were, in fact, four infrared sauna compartments in the room, all different sizes. The two in the back corners were the biggest, a large octagonal communal infrared sauna with a wraparound bench on the inside, and a huge cubicle with two adjacent lounge-type chairs for easy relaxation, complete with radios and MP3 players. The two smaller ones at the other end of the room, on either side of the door, were simple confined spaces for sitting, the right for one person, the left for two people. The slightly sour scent of hemlock wafted through the air, coming from the lumber used. The smell reminded me of the woods, which in my opinion was never a bad thing in a sauna or any bathing environment.

In the center of the room was a tall pillar with four wide showerheads for those wishing to cool off and wash up. In between the closed sauna compartments were shelves with towels, soaps and shampoos, sponges and body oils, and a rack for bathrobes.

“Something wrong with the shower?” I asked.

“Pressure’s a
