CHAPTER 11

Carlotta

My heart pounded and I felt sweat on my back and palms. My brain was so conditioned to obey Natale's orders that I hadn't thought twice when he had ordered me to leave.

Seconds before, I had seen a bullet drill through his shoulder and... fuck. Blue lights came rushing into the parking lot. Not just the fire department, but the cops. If I went back now, they'd arrest both of us. If I ran, I was deliberately abandoning him.

But he'd said he'd find me as soon as he took care of the guy. So far, Natale had kept every promise. Was I supposed to count on him doing the same now?

I clenched my teeth so hard that sharp pain shot through my jaw. Finally, I started the engine and let the car roll out of the parking lot. Unnoticed, because the emergency services were busy inspecting the building.

With every yard I moved away from the building, my guilty conscience grew. What was I supposed to do? Wait? Go back? Go down together with him?

I was almost on the freeway when I jerked the wheel around and sped back at way too much speed.

The large emergency vehicles had already disappeared and apart from a small police car and the museum chief's car, there was no one else in the parking lot.

The cops were talking to the chief, it didn't seem like they had a hit on their hands from a distance though.

Hadn't they seen the smashed display cases? The window? Had they not found a bullet giving evidence of the shot?

Or had they already taken Natale away? I doubted that they would have put him injured in a regular patrol car, and an ambulance had been nowhere in sight.

Before I was spotted, I drove off again, Amedea's number already on my phone screen.

»Are you safe?« she asked first of all.

I gulped. For me, I could answer yes to that question, but not for Natale. Fierce phantom pain spread through my chest as tears welled up in my eyes.

That wasn't the plan. In, out. A sure thing, as usual. No incidents. No collateral damage. Shit.

»Carlotta?«

»Yes. Yes. I'm out. But Natale isn't. And I have no idea where he is. He got shot and tried to take the guy down, but so far he hasn't called me. It didn't look like they arrested or drove anyone to the hospital, either.« I rattled off all the information that popped into my head before biting my bottom lip to stifle the sob that wanted to shake my body.

Panic seized control of me.

»I had a connection with him the whole time, but it just suddenly broke,« she muttered. »I'll try calling him again.«

I heard her typing in the background, but couldn't focus on that any more than I could focus on the damn traffic.

»He's not answering,« she informed me after a few seconds. »But if they haven't taken him away... wait, let me check.«

Again the click of her keyboard. »No reports of it in the police registry.
