Chapter Six

The steak wasn’t exceptional, but it would do until Valken could return to the Dalistine, their hovering spacecraft. He’d mulled over his situation for days. His bare wrist was a stark reminder that his communicator had been taken from him. On the rare occasions that both Cyon and Jarrek left the house, Valken had escaped his cell and searched the small abode for the bracelet. He’d come up empty-handed every damn time.

Without his communicator, he had no way of contacting Zhett or the crew to alert them of his whereabouts. It complicated his precarious situation more than he cared to analyze.

Jarrek polished off his meal in a tense silence. Valken watched his darling mate’s shoulders grow tauter as the meal progressed. His cheeks flushed every now and again. Those beautiful eyes of his stole numerous glances from beneath his thick golden brown lashes. As confident as he appeared when it came to fighting, he didn’t have a good handle on his confidence now.

“Why do you color your hair?” Valken asked. Jarrek paused, his last piece of potato at his lips. He looked up from the plate and stared across the small table. Valken wiped his mouth with a napkin and shrugged. “You were not born with black hair.”

“To blend into the night. It’s one of the only things I can control. I can’t dye my scales, and I can’t change the paleness of my skin.” A sad grin touched his mate’s lips. “Always looking over your shoulder for unknown dangers because you are different makes a person take extra precautions.”

“Hence the arsenal.”

Jarrek nodded and lowered the potato to the plate. “You were right, you know. When you said I didn’t have skill when it came to hand-to-hand combat. That’s Tae. He can put a triple black belt to shame.” A worried crease deepened between Jarrek’s brows. “And that he never returned from the transporter gives me good reason to be concerned.”

“I’m certain your brother is safe. There’s a good chance that Zhett encountered him.” If that was the case, Dante was on the Dalistine being questioned in Valken’s disappearance. “Zhett won’t harm him.”

“Tell me, how did you find us?”

Valken leaned back in the seat and flicked open the top two buttons of his uniform. He had changed out of the clothing Jarrek offered him once they returned from the butcher. The material had been itchy and uncomfortable. It had made him feel confined. If he needed to protect his mate, his fighting ability would have been limited.

“Your grandfather gathered four of us—Zhett, Tyrus, Gherret, and myself—to set out on a mission of search and rescue. We have many enemies in the universe, and one such enemy is actively hunting you and your brothers in order to create his own army of dragons.” Valken arched his brows. “But you are aware of that. Xona has held a grudge against the Khoronian people for centuries. He’s a scavenger with evil intent feeding his veins. He lives for destruction. The Hynesin bloodline, which you were born into, holds secrets to the universe.
