Chapter Sixteen

The band launched into the seventh run-through of Drive Another Nail In. Bryan had spent most of the afternoon taking random notes of the interaction between the new band members. He’d observed Aubrey’s manner as the leader, as well as the nuances of his rehearsal performance versus what he’d seen of his concert ones over the years. He couldn’t tell much difference between show Aubrey and practice Aubrey, which he’d found surprising. The rocker gave all of himself each time they went through a number. The only difference he could detect was if Aubrey made eye contact or gestured to the band to speed up or slow down during a section. Bryan noted all his observations in the notebook he’d brought with him.

Bryan’s methodology was more organic than some writers. He handwrote his initial thoughts and ideas, then put them in some sort of a logical order on his laptop at the end of each day. But he hadn’t been able to help himself at the beginning of rehearsal. The first few songs they’d played, Bryan had simply watched. When Aubrey would made eye contact with him, beam a smile in his direction, it had thrilled him to his core. It gave the term ‘fanboy’ a whole new meaning.

Other than the fact that he’d been introduced as Aubrey’s co-writer on his memoir, there had been no other explanation of their relationship. They’d kept a professional distance physically, which was exactly what Bryan had expected. Aubrey had explained to him on the way over that with the exception of the bass player, all the musicians were new—they’d been auditioned and chosen a month prior to Bryan’s initial meeting with Aubrey at the café. The players had received recordings of the material to work with, but it would be the first time they would all be rehearsing together since then.

Bryan had expressed surprise that Jimmy, the bass player from Falling in Stereo, would be part of the new band. Aubrey had made it clear when he’d spoken with Conrad Jenson for his comeback interview that he wasn’t getting the band back together, that it was a solo project. He’d promised the fans he would include Falling’s biggest hits when he played live, but other than that, all the material would be new.

‘Jimmy’s my brother, man. I couldn’t do this shit without him. He was never one of the problems in the band. He was always there for me, but even more, he was there for the music.’

Aubrey had also divulged to Bryan that Jimmy knew he was gay, and had been the one band member who’d always said to Aubrey that if he ever came out, he’d support him one hundred percent. The other band members had always discouraged such a move, had told Aubrey he’d be making a huge mistake and that it would ruin everything.

After going over the syncopated ending to Drive several times in a row, Aubrey held up a hand, waving. He yelled into the microphone over the din.
