Chapter Eighteen

It felt like forever. Alex hadn't moved from the edge of the bed; she just sat there, wishing Daniel would hurry back. She surfed the main channels to see if there was any mention of the accident on the news. It was hard to focus on much of anything; it took a full thirty minutes for the trembling in her hands to stop. She couldn't get the image of the driver out of her head. He'd done nothing wrong, had nothing to do with this, and now he was dead. Alex wondered if he had a family, then shoved the thought aside.

Had the sedan been a crazy fluke? She doubted it. It was creepy how easily they'd been found. She wondered what she'd do if she was found again before Daniel came back. Every sound was amplified; each carried potential meaning. Her eyes scanned the room for a weapon, but could find nothing. Even the lamp was nailed down.

By the time Daniel let himself back into the room, she was a nervous wreck. The first words to tumble out of her mouth were, “Teach me to fight.”

“Hello to you, too,” he grinned. “What brought that on?”

“I don't like feeling like a sitting duck or only feeling safe when you're around. I want to know how to fight. I'm assuming you know some sort of ninja moves.”

“I studied kenp. Not exactly ninja, but I assume that's what you're referring to.”

“Mock all you want – you're teaching me.”

“In all our free time.”

“I'm not saying I want you to make me a black belt. Just show me enough to protect myself. I don't want to be a liability.”

“Fair enough,” he conceded. “But we have something else we need to do first.”

“What's that?”

He held up a plastic shopping bag. “Makeovers. Then we're having new IDs made. Then we sleep.”

“Makeovers?” Alex repeated nervously as Daniel dumped the contents of the bag onto the bed. He'd bought scissors, blond hair dye and electric hair clippers. She sighed; she should have seen it coming.

“For what it's worth, I think you'll be a very hot blonde.”

“Do you realize I have never once dyed my hair? I'm proud to be a brunette.”

“It'll come out soon. It's temporary,” he promised. “And who says the clippers aren't for you? Maybe the dye is for me.”

“Actually, you just did, but I'll let that slide.” She grudgingly accepted the scissors and headed to the bathroom. She grabbed a handful of hair and lopped it off before she could lose her courage.

Daniel followed her, leaning against the doorway and watching her work for several minutes.

“Did you get the papers?” Alex finally broke the silence.

“I did. After we get our new pictures taken, we can sit down and take another look at them.”

“I can't help thinking I should know the answers to this whole mess. Like it's all in my brain but I just can't quite nail it down.”

“It'll come to you,” he promised, plugging in the hair trimmer he held in his hand.

They worked side by side in silence, methodically altering their appearances.
