Chapter 16

Ace

I look at the closed door and wonder how things could have taken such a one-eighty degree turn in a split second. One moment Lana is in my arms once more and I’m about to drop my pants and bury myself in her body, and the next I’m left throbbing with need and no Lana.

Through the fog of shock, her comment about me being married hits home. Damn! That must have been what Meredith told her. I need to clear things up right away and there’s no time like the present. But first I need to get myself under control.

It takes me a few minutes but I manage to do so. As I’m about to leave my office when my phone rings. At first, I’m tempted to ignore the call. But I see that it’s Reggie.

“Hey, Ace. I hope I haven’t caught you at a bad time.”

“It’s never a bad time to hear from you, Reggie, even when it is. What’s up?”

I listen as Reggie updates me on Meredith. As the conversation ends, I’m steaming. So that’s what prompted the impromptu visit. Well! She has another thing coming her way.

As I leave my office, I run into Elaine who is about to knock. She opens her mouth to speak and I cut her off immediately.

“Hold my messages. I’ll be right back.”

She takes one look at me and steps back.

“Okay.”

I stride past her and soon find myself walking past the other departments. Eyes turn and I know the gossip mill will be active today regarding these trips to and from Lana’s office. But nothing is going to stand in my way. When I get to her door, I find it closed. Without knocking, I open it and find her office in some disarray. It seems as if she is – packing?

“Leave it on the chair please,” she says without looking up.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

Her head snaps up and our eyes meet. I see the trepidation in her gaze and I feel like a heel that she should feel fear in my presence. I was once her champion. Now I’m her tormentor.

I close the door behind me without taking my eyes off her. I walk across the office and she stands behind her chair, using it as a shield. I hold her eyes as I speak as evenly as possible.

“Why are you packing?”

“I’m going to work from home for the rest of the week.”

“The hell you are! And what did you mean in my office by ‘I’m a married man’?”

“Just what I said. You have a wife.”

I throw my head back and laugh incredulously. I look at her.

“You’re serious aren’t you?”

“Ace, don’t pretend. Please. It’s already an embarrassing situation. We can’t do this. You’re my boss and you’re married and-”

I cut her off mid-sentence. “Lana, I’m not married.”

“Yes, you are. I saw your wife with my own eyes, heard her with my own ears and spoke to her with my own mouth. You are a very married man who, according to your wife, has an open marriage.
