There was a full moon tonight. Jack looked up at the sky, and admired the glow that flowed down on him from it. It truly lit up everything, making it easy for him to find his way through the village to the edge of the forest. Without any trepidation, he continued on, thinking about the best places to hunt. Rabbits were plentiful, but they tended to not come out that much at night. Big game was certainly possible and bringing down a deer if luck was on his side would bring his family more than enough meat to feed them for a while. Their diet consisted of a lot of wild game along with the few chickens they kept.

Jack trudged on, heading toward the abandoned cabin that had become a landmark point for him while hunting.

The cabin stood in a small clearing on its own. It was quickly becoming overgrown with vines and other vegetation and soon Jack guessed that eventually it would fall to ruins like everything else that had been abandoned and left to its own demise.

Jack stopped walking when he heard a rustling to his right. With the gun in his hand, he held it out in front of him with his finger on the trigger. The rifle had been a gift from his father two years ago for his birthday. Whatever this was it had to be big according to the sounds that were coming from that direction along with a long series of deep growls and snarls. A bear… That was what it had to be. But what expelled itself from the bushes wasn’t a bear.

It came at him which such ferocity that Jack lost his train of thought and dropped the rifle. It landed with a thud to his side. He put up his hands to defend himself from the wolflike creature, but it was an effort in futility. The beast landed on him, pounding him hard to the ground with a force unlike he’d ever witnessed before. “Jesus,” he shouted out, wrestling with the thing that was tearing at his clothes. The savage beast had him pinned and he couldn’t slide out from under its weight. This was it. This was the end for him. He was surely going to die. All sorts of things flooded his mind like how his family would react when they found out about the end of his demise. He didn’t want to die like this. This wasn’t the way he wanted to go out of this world and into the next.

The rifle. If only he could reach it. Jack stretched out his right arm, feeling along the ground for it. Pain tore through him as the beast’s claws shredded his clothing and dug deeper into his skin.

He frantically felt for the rifle, reaching as far as he could. It was in his hand now, and as he hauled it closer to him he did his best to fight off the creature’s death grip. Yelling for help would be useless.
