The late 1950s was a strange time for jazz and for America. President Dwight Eisenhower’s favorite musical organization was Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. His favorite writer was Zane Grey. Henry Miller, D. H. Lawrence, William Burroughs, Jean Genet, J. P. Donleavy, Vladimir Nabokov, and pubic hair were obscene. Charlie Parker and Art Tatum died, then Lester Young and Billie Holiday, who was arrested in her hospital bed. Miles Davis received what the Amsterdam News termed “a Georgia head-whipping” for standing outside the Greenwich Village nightclub where he was working. Art Pepper drew two-to-twenty in California for his third drug bust. Young, Holiday, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, and Chet Baker, among others, also did time for drug offenses. Bud Powell, in mental institutions five times from 1945 to ’55, was not alone with his problems.
