Callie was exhausted, but she lay awake for the next couple of hours, trying to wrap her mind around everything. It wasn’t easy, and she finally gave up on sleeping for a while. She left the bed and stared out of the window. It was dark, but the moon was bright and lit up the small yard at the back of the cabin. There wasn’t much to distract her mind, though, and she was about to turn back to the bed when a flare of light caught her attention.
Callie slunk back into the shadow and watched. Malia walked out of the woods with a tiny ball of light playing along her fingers. She was rolling it around and watching it, seemingly lost in thought. Her face was mesmerising and Callie stared, transfixed.
Malia suddenly stopped, dropped her hands and swung around. Dante emerged from the shadows behind her. His face was full of scorn and fury, and he looked like he was about to go into a brawl. They spoke, but it was quiet and Callie had no hopes of hearing what was said.
She watched them closely, and their facial expressions and body language were enough to convince her they were arguing heatedly. She wanted to know what about, needed to understand these fairies she was supposed to be trusting to keep her safe right now. She wasn’t sure she could without all the facts.
Dante grabbed Malia by the wrists and pulled her close. His face was at her ear, but then a bright light flared between them and he fell away. Malia stood her ground, but Dante ended up on his ass. Only for a second, though. He jumped up, gave her one last threatening look, then turned and left, striding into the dark woods.
Callie breathed a sigh of relief to see him go.
Malia’s head shot up and turned Callie’s way. Her icy, blue eyes were bright in the darkness. She was looking right at Callie.
Callie’s face burned with her embarrassment at being caught. It wasn’t her business to be watching them fight. But I deserve to know what is going on with these fairies who are using me and trying to keep me safe. Callie straightened and put her hands on her hips, staring back at Malia. Malia narrowed her eyes and stalked off towards the front of the house.
Callie braced herself for a confrontation, sure Malia was about to come in and try to put her in her place. She was actually excited about it. She wanted the opportunity to be alone with Malia again, to tell her what she thought of her. Tell her she was not allowed to touch her again, that she wasn’t interested in her manipulative sex.
Malia never came.
Callie crawled back into bed after a while and tried to sleep. She closed her eyes and was assaulted by the horrible dreams again. Searing pain and suffocating darkness. She smelt something burning, and she opened her mouth to scream but choked on smoke and sulphur.
