The next three weeks went by uneventfully. Lee had secured the house better, and no more lone figures or groups had been seen since. As far as research and such, everyone was still digging. Not wanting anyone to find us all in one place, we decided not to meet again right away. We did a lot of video conferences on equipment Lee supplied.
My physical therapy was going great, and with the help of a walker I was moving, slowly, but it was progress.
“Are you ready?” Adelaide asked for the tenth time in five minutes. It was the day of her concert, and we were all driving the thirty minutes to the music hall where it was being held. Her tutor knew who Addy was, but none of the kids or staff did. They thought her name was Amber, and she understood there were reasons for her protection.
Adelaide was wearing a beautiful rose gold colored dress, with shiny white shoes, and her hair was up and out of her face. A cascade of golden curls fell down her back, same color as mine. Every time I looked at her, I could never find any trace of her mother Pricilla. Her mother, when she was alive, was very beautiful. Caramel colored hair, dark eyes, and sharp features. But Adelaide had none of that.
“Yeah, let’s go,” I said as Tony held the door open for us.
Missy was there as added security and got in first, followed by Addy, then me and Poe. Tony was last and the five of us drove to the concert with Corey behind the wheel.
“It must be weird being here all this time, Corey,” I said as he turned on the main road.
“It is. My wife and kids are thrilled, though.”
He was always with Poe, but Poe hadn’t gone back to Haven Hart since he’d found out I was awake. Instead, he’d been working from home.
“That’s wonderful.” We fell into a comfortable silence.
Adelaide was asking Missy why her tattoos were white and not black like those she’d seen.
“Well, you see how my skin is dark?” Addy nodded. “The white ink pops more on my skin.”
“It’s real pretty, Missy.”
“Thanks, squirt.”
We arrived at the concert hall and Tony stepped out first. I was slower than everyone else, but they were patient. I took the ramp up while Poe and Addy took the steps. At the top they waited for me.
“You have to go in the back, right?” I asked Addy.
“Yup.”
I met Missy’s gaze and she nodded. “I got her.”
The two of them went inside and to the right, and we went in and straight into the auditorium.
The hall was stunning, my grandmother would’ve loved it. We sat in luxurious seats. Poe was to my right and Tony sat to my left by the aisle. The velvet curtain was closed, and I knew it would open to an orchestra. Adelaide was so immensely gifted that she was part of an elite musical group of children. I wouldn’t be surprised if every child up there made a future in the music business.
