Boat trim â maximum waterline length is good for boat speed on flat water.
Waves/confused sea: Trim the boat for maximum waterline length for maximum boat speed.
Beating in medium winds: Maximum waterline length on relatively flat water/short chop. In larger waves, trim slightly further aft to allow the bow to lift slightly and find its own way through the waves using less rudder to steer the boat. This is very effective in dinghies and light displacement yachts.
Good boat trim here is indicated by the clean exit of water away from the transom.
