I HAD just enough time to stop at the liquor store and make it to Joshua’s on time. When I pulled in next to his car in the double-wide driveway, I had to grin at the sheer perfection of his little house. I knew he owned it and took great pride in its appearance; he had told me about all the landscaping he wanted to do as soon as the weather warmed up. It was painted a cheery light blue with white shutters adorning the windows. The front door was a light-colored wood, oak maybe, and had an autumn wreath hung over the knocker. I left the overnight bag sitting on the backseat, picked up the bottle of my favorite pinot grigio, and, with a bounce in my step, walked up the flagstone path to his door.
My knock was answered immediately by a haggard looking Joshua. I knew he was still putting in long days, and I almost suggested we postpone. But the instant he saw me, his tired features transformed into a beautiful grin. He ushered me in the door, took the bottle of wine from me, and then proceeded to devour me.
When he finally pulled back, I was panting and leaning heavily against the entryway wall. He grinned, his eyes full of smug satisfaction, and he lifted a hand to trace his thumb along my now swollen bottom lip.
“Hi,” he said, his voice gravelly.
I had to pant for another few seconds before I could manage, “Hi yourself.”
He took my hand and led me into the house. I barely managed a glance at his comfortable-looking but sparsely decorated living room before he was tugging me into the kitchen. It was a homey room, warm and bright. The cupboards were a dark, rich wood with gleaming handles and the counters looked like marble. I didn’t know much about fixtures and appliances, but everything looked high-end. Instantly I realized this was a room Joshua spent a lot of time in. The care he’d taken in decorating and outfitting the kitchen was obvious.
“I’m glad you’re here,” he said, glancing back over his shoulder, his gaze sweeping my body from head to toe. “You look fantastic. Dinner is almost ready. This wine is perfect to go with the risotto and shrimp. I hope you aren’t allergic!”
He turned fast, his eyes wide, as if he’d somehow made a huge mistake. I grinned, and shook my head. “I’m not. I love shrimp. It smells amazing, by the way.”
Joshua blew out a breath, and I could see the relief all over his face. “I should have asked,” he said with a self-deprecating shake of his head. “But I wanted to impress you and it’s one of my best dishes so….” He trailed off with a little shrug.
I laughed. “You could have made macaroni and cheese from a box, and I would have been impressed. I can’t cook for shit.”
“I’ll remember that for next time,” he said with a smile of his own. He kissed my cheek and nudged me toward the small table in the corner of the kitchen.
