Chapter 11

Adam’s thoughts were a jumble as he kept a safe distance behind Olivia’s car all the way back to town. She’d invited him in for coffee. Was it simply so he could get warm? Was she trying to lull him into thinking she would behave and then go out again the moment he left?

Though if that was her plan, it made no sense to invite him in at all.

He’d enjoyed walking back to their cars with his arm around her. She fitted next to him perfectly. It felt right.

Had he proven himself in some way? Or was she after more information about what the Pattons might be doing? Not that he had the slightest idea. Something had been going on and he’d guarantee it wasn’t to do with the winery. No one shipped wine at midnight. So they might have been clearing out any evidence.

He sighed. He already had a lot of explaining to do in the morning. Lincoln had been pissed that he’d been anywhere near the Vale.

Adam parked behind Olivia and joined her at the front door. He’d thawed somewhat in the car, but hopefully the offer for coffee still stood.

“Come in.” She headed for the kitchen. The pot belly stove was still alight, though the wood burned low.

“Do you want me to stoke the fire while I’m here?” he asked.

“That would be great. Thanks.”

He spent a few minutes doing that while she made them drinks. When they were both seated on the couch, Adam asked, “What were you doing out there?”

She shifted so she could look at him and sighed. “After you dropped me off I couldn’t settle.” She waved her hands at the printouts on the coffee table. “I’ve been looking into the businesses Mark was syphoning money into and it reminded me I wanted to check out the warehouse.”

He picked up one of the documents and read it. “Check out what exactly?”

“Their accounts.”

He had to admire her tenacity even if it made his job a hell of a lot more difficult. “So your plan was to break into the warehouse and steal their computer?”

She shook her head. “No. I was hoping to log into their software and download a copy.”

“And what were you going to do when you were caught on their security cameras and I had to arrest you for breaking and entering?”

“Security cameras?”

“The restaurant has security cameras so I’d bet the sheds do too,” he answered. “They’re probably alarmed as well. Not to mention any evidence you might have found would have been inadmissible.” He was beginning to sound like Lincoln. He’d heard Kit complain about Lincoln’s cop voice.

“So maybe I didn’t think things through,” she admitted.

He reached out and squeezed her hand. “I understand your need for answers.” He’d been obsessed with the case since he’d realised the connection between the Pattons and Foley.

She blew out a breath. “I was hoping to help Stuart and Hayley get closure too.” Her smile warmed him further and he placed his mug on the coffee table so he could give her his full attention.
