A: The way a spray pattern is supposed to look. B: What happens when the air pressure is too high, the fluid flow too low, or the spreader adjustment valve set too high. C: This happens when the left- or right-side horn holes are plugged. D: Material flow is exceeding air cap’s capacity, or the spreader adjustment valve is set too low. E: The horn holes are plugged, or there is an obstruction on the top or bottom of the fluid tip.
Keep your air hose out of your work by attaching it to your belt with a clip, throwing it over your shoulder, or even running it down your trouser leg. If your spray pattern becomes skewed or the gun starts to sputter, stop and determine what is wrong. Common problems are outlined above.
Whether you paint a whole car all at once or paint it in pieces is up to you. There are those who claim that painting a complete car all at once provides a more consistent finish, but I like to take the car apart as much as possible so I can easily get up into fenders and painted areas that cannot be reached when the car is assembled. It all depends on how much time you want to spend and what the car really needs.
If you paint your car all together, start by painting door jambs and hard to get areas first, then go to the sequences shown in the accompanying illustrations depending on the type of spray booth you are using. Most painters like to shoot on a light misty tack coat first, let it get sticky, then shoot on full, wet coats. How long you let the tack coat set is a matter of choice. Tom Horvath likes the tack-and-whack method where you only leave the tack coat for about five minutes. Bruce Haye gives the tack coat 20 minutes to set up.
I have included two chapters outlining the way these two top professional painters do it. Read them both, then take what you need from what they have to say and develop your own technique. As we have said before in this book, painting cars is an art. There are several good ways to do it, but practice is what makes the pros.
Cleaning Your Paint Gun—As we pointed out in the paint chapter, the newest finishes are essentially plastics. They harden in a given amount of time by chemical reaction (depending on the temperature) and that’s that. Once they set up, they can’t be dissolved with the usual thinners. In fact, the new polyester primers are so tough and solvent resistant that if you leave them in your paint gun for longer than 25 minutes you might as well throw the gun away.
As a result, cleaning a paint gun isn’t just tidying up the outside of it. To do the job right the gun must be torn down and thoroughly scrubbed with gun wash or lacquer thinner. Automotive paint dealers as well as the
