Chapter Seven

In Which Snow Is Skating on Thin Ice

and Cracking It

A few days later

Dineiro’s mother, Aridana, was nothing like the cute and loving purple dragon. In fact, if I hadn’t known better, I wouldn’t have said they were related at all, and that became obvious from the very beginning, even when Aridana was in human form. Whereas Dineiro was kind and affectionate, Aridana’s chilly demeanor rivaled Frost’s. Still, her actual presence in the ice palace didn’t bother me as much as the fact that Frost hadn’t shared with me the reasons of her visit.

“You have a lovely home,” she said as Frost showed her into the throne room. She peered closer to the statues and eyed them with interest. “I must thank you for inviting me.”

“On the contrary,” Frost replied. “You honor my home with your presence.”

I couldn’t help a grimace at the exchange. I realized now that I’d preferred it when my mate had been rude and aloof to everyone but me. Now, he was lavishing Aridana with attention, and I didn’t like it.

I made my way to Frost’s side, fully intending to attach myself to his side and stake my claim, so to speak. Aridana might be mated, but her other half, fire dragon Zewyn, wasn’t here now. Therefore, it couldn’t hurt to remind her that Frost was taken.

And then, the unlikeliest and most unexpected thing happened. Frost kissed my hand and whispered, “Snow, would you mind giving Aridana and me some privacy?”

I couldn’t believe my ears. My mate was pushing me away, replacing me with some stranger. Perhaps they didn’t even have anything erotic in mind, but it certainly seemed that he trusted her more than he trusted me.

“Frost…”

“Just wait for me in your room, all right?” he demanded. “I promise I won’t be long.”

With a tight smile, I nodded at Frost. “Of course. Lady Aridana, I’ll leave the two of you to discuss.”

Struggling not to lose my temper, I politely bowed and left the room. Miraculously, I managed not to stalk out in a huffy fit, but I might have slammed the throne room door a bit too loudly. Oh well. It couldn’t be helped now. I’d have felt worse about it if Frost hadn’t pissed me off so badly.

I’d hoped that my mate would rush to my side to soothe me, but he never did. After it became obvious that whatever plans he had with Aridana were more important than his promise to me, I decided to stop pouting and go for a walk. After all, if Frost’s meeting with Aridana ended, he could find me easily enough wherever I went.

As I wrapped my cloak tighter around myself, I was, of course, intercepted by Ophelia and Hamlet. “Master, you shouldn’t go out alone,” the wolf told me, watching me with obvious disapproval.

It was true that Frost always accompanied me when we went out, but I had no intention to randomly go on an adventure. I just needed a breath of fresh air. “I’m just going for a walk in the gardens,” I replied.
